This is a great budget rod and reel. Works well with snapper and triggerfish. It’s heavier and bulkier than other more expensive options but for the price it is tough to beat. It’ll always be on my boat as a backup or for my kids to use.

I bought this combo mainly for boat guests, because I fish left handed reels, but I may have to switch. The reel is a monster that is sure to handle the largest of fish. I've only taken it out once, and it demonstrated the quality associated with the Penn reputation. At this price, it is a winner.

i also use this for saltwater trolling. retrieve is slow but smooth and power pack ! i put in 80 lb braid about 600 yards. loud clicker. strong rod.

The Penn Senator Combos could be used for shark fishing applications. I would specifically reommend a Penn 114H2/SL3080CR66 Senator Boat Combo. Yes, you would be able to use these combos for that purpose. Although if fishing for small sharks, you most likely would not need 100lb. test. At most, you would probably go with 80lb. test, but in all likelihood, you'd be fine with 50lb. test.

If you are looking at this combo for your trip I would recommend the 114H2 / SL3080C66 model.

Is this ok for surfcasting

This would work for kayaking baits out and fishing for shark from the surf. This combo would not be ideal for constant casting from the surf using lures or bait. The rod is not a ideal length for fishing from the surf. 8-12 ft are good lengths to start.

The Penn 114H2/SL3080C66 Senator Trolling Combo would be a good trolling combo. there are Penn senators specifically made for wireline and the model is the Tsunami Trophy TSTBC-661HW / Penn 113H2SP Special Senator Wire Line Casting Combo.
