This is a great budget rod and reel. Works well with snapper and triggerfish. It’s heavier and bulkier than other more expensive options but for the price it is tough to beat. It’ll always be on my boat as a backup or for my kids to use.

I bought this combo mainly for boat guests, because I fish left handed reels, but I may have to switch. The reel is a monster that is sure to handle the largest of fish. I've only taken it out once, and it demonstrated the quality associated with the Penn reputation. At this price, it is a winner.

i also use this for saltwater trolling. retrieve is slow but smooth and power pack ! i put in 80 lb braid about 600 yards. loud clicker. strong rod.

Doing a cod/ ling trip. Is this combo good for this application? Also what braid test lb and leader lb test should I spool it with?

Hi James, For your application, I would recommend a Penn SQLII30LW2050C66 Squall II Level Wind Conventional Combo. This would be light enough and strong enough to use for Cod and Ling bottom fishing applications without getting fatigued all day with a heavier combo.
