Definately a masterpiece of engineering & product design. The finest reel I have ever owned. Machining is exceptional; surfaces are finely finished.
Extremely smooth operation, I can see all of my friends begging to try it. I own & have fished 3 Stella's and they are very smooth too, but the VanStall had me smiling like a kid on Christmas morning. Really, really 'ROCKSOLID'
The price is money very, very, very well spent.
Pros
  • Very light, extemely smooth operation,
  • Rock solid feel, machining & finish are superb.
  • This reel has to be 'best in class'.

Expensive, but great reel
April 15, 2022
Took this on a week long trip and it felt great. smooth reeling action, fast retrieve, and love the manual bail. The only thing I would complain about is why did I have to spend 60 bucks on the silver handle knob? Why not just put the bigger silver knob and charge me an extra 60 bucks. Everything is silver on this reel except the knob.

  • For me it was effort to buy it, but it's worth it.

March 6, 2022
First fish with this reel was an upper slot Red out of the surf. Performed exactly the way you would expect. Very smooth for a sealed reel. It does live up to the Van Staal hype in my opinion. My second reel by Van Staal and I am pleased with both.
Pros
  • A very well-built reel
Cons
  • A bit pricey

Check out the St Croix AVS96MHF2, matches up really well with the VR50 for your application. 20lb braid should do the trick.

June 24, 2018
I ordered a VR50 and can't wait to get it. The one questions I have is that I see you can spool 380 yards of 20 lb braid on it but could you go 30 lb braid and if so how many yards of 30 could possibly be spooled? If putting a little heavier braid on the reel, will that effect the casting or effeiecny of the reel? Thanks
1 Answer
Going from 20lb to 30lb will not make big difference when it comes to casting distance. You would get some where around 300-320 yards of line on the reel.
