Expensive, but great reel
April 15, 2022
Took this on a week long trip and it felt great. smooth reeling action, fast retrieve, and love the manual bail. The only thing I would complain about is why did I have to spend 60 bucks on the silver handle knob? Why not just put the bigger silver knob and charge me an extra 60 bucks. Everything is silver on this reel except the knob.

First fish with this reel was an upper slot Red out of the surf. Performed exactly the way you would expect. Very smooth for a sealed reel. It does live up to the Van Staal hype in my opinion. My second reel by Van Staal and I am pleased with both.
Pros
  • A very well-built reel
Cons
  • A bit pricey

What gen would the Van Staal VR125 be if I got it in Dec of 2021. Because I want vr 150 spool but I don't know what gen the reel is and all that I see is gen 1
1 Answer
Hi Ashton, The best way to tell what Generation Van Staal VR you have would be to look at the differences. The biggest main differences that you should notice is the Drag Knob on the Gen 1 series are thin and small compared to the Gen 2 series. Most importantly, if you remove the spool off of your reel, The main shaft will be very thin on the Gen 1 series and very thick on the Gen 2 series Van Staal VR reels. This is the easiest giveaway as to what Generation your Van Staal VR is. Hi Rob, Considering that your son will be using the setup. I would recommend a Van Staal VR 175 size. Specifically model: VAN-0166-1; TackleDirect Code: VAN-0166-1. https://www.tackledirect.com/van-staal-vr175-spinning-reels.html. This size is right in the middle of the 150 and 200.
