Best Budget Rod for Fighting Sharks and Rays
April 28, 2022
Very good rod for the price. I was able to easily cast a 5oz weight with 2/3 of a mackerel on the hook. I've caught multiple bat rays with over 36 inch wingspan and the rod handles them perfectly.
Pros
  • Strong
  • Quality eyelets
  • Great for fighting large fish
  • Sensitive

Extremely happy with this rod so far but haven't put it to the test yet.
Overall rod looks great and seems solid
I purchased two of these and paired the with a penn 6000 spinning reel with 40lb nomad blue braid. I will not be using this as a surf rod, we will be using these rods as casting rids for offshore to target schools of tuna and Mahi along with cobia or really any fish we can find that requires a long cast.
Once summer roles around and we test the rods I will update the review but as of now its exactly what I was looking for.
Pros
  • Looks amazing
  • Budget friendly
  • Solid design and eyes look pretty solid but we know these eyes tend to fail
  • Strong backbone but enough whip to cast a long distance
  • Extra long casting handle is the perfect length
Cons
  • No as of right now

Good entry level surf rod
January 12, 2022
At the price of this rod, it wouldn't be fair to set high expectations. The rod is very stiff and maybe is most suitable for chunking or that type of fishing. Not really that great for working artificials in the surf. But...for someone who doesn't want to make a big investment in a surf rod, but wants to have one on hand, this probably fits the bill.

Light and priced right!
December 21, 2021
My brother picked up one of these for fishing in the surf. It is very light and I can tell you that if it is as tough as my tsunami trophy or my five star, it should be a good one.
Pros
  • Light, looks great

Great surf rod for the Gulf
October 15, 2021
I use this rod for fishing in the Gulf of Mexico when I am on vacation. Despite the low price tag, the 11ft Heavy was plenty sensitive enough to feel the take of this small Whiting that I caught while fishing at night. However, I am confident that this thing could easily handle a small shark of large stingray (which is why I got it in the first place). All in all, great rod and fantastic service.
Pros
  • Great sensitivity and can cast a large amount of lure weights ( seriously, anything between 2oz and 8oz will do just fine).
  • The grip is fantastic and your hands won't slip even when it is wet.
  • The handle is plenty long enough that you can bomb casts past the breakers.
  • Well balanced.
Cons
  • Pretty stiff and anything less than 2oz won't load it properly.
  • There are not a lot of rod tubes that fit it because of how big the bottom guide is.

Tackle direct was great!
The rod was a bit bulky and heavy but for the price I expected that. It's well built and has worked well.

Hi Scott,

The Tsunami Sapphire XT Surf rods are a 50/50 split.  You can definitely pair the VSX200 with the 11ft model https://www.tackledirect.com/tsunami-sassxt-1102h-sapphire-xt-surf-spinning-rod.html  to fish the Canal.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Can the 11foot rods   20lb to 40lbs   heavily can be used  for surf shark Fishing for blacktips and medium size bulls sharks?

1 Answer
Hi James, The Tsunami SASSXT 1102H Sapphire XT Surf Spinning Rod would be fine to use for smaller size sharks. However since this is currently sold out I would also recommend a Tsunami TSTIISS-1102XH Trophy II Surf Spinning Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/tsunami-tstiiss-1102xh-trophy-ii-surf-spinning-rod.html This rod would also be ideal for your shark fishing application for targeting sharks off the beach. How far can this fishing rod be thrown?

1 Answer
Hi Xinghua, The Tsunami SASSXT 1002MH Sapphire XT Surf Spinning Rod has a lure weight of 3-6oz. Your casts will vary depending on the sinker size and technique. If you are using a 6oz sinker with a small bait, this will ultimately give you the maximum casting distance for this rod. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with.
