I've used this rod for over a year now, and I do like it a lot. I mostly use it as my bait fishing stick, but have used it for heavier plugs, and metal as well when the surf is rough, and casting distance is a factor. It casts the range good enough, but gets a little soft towards the higher end of the rating... I've thrown 8oz on it before, but I wouldn't lean into the cast as I'd do with lighter loads on there.... That's not really a negative as the baits weight does put it slightly over the rods stated rating. A couole things I didn't like was the fact that purchased the rod as new, used it, and later found the bottom, and top section to have different serial numbers on them, making the great warranty this company offers useless. The different numbers lead me to believe that the rod I recieved may of been a return, a factory mix up, or one of the refurbished rods they sell at a discount. Another thing I noticed was that the reel seat was a little loose, and that it did seem to loosen up on its own even when tightened down before heading out. I have a penn ssv7500, and when a big fish is on, I can feel the reel flexing in the hoods of the reel seat, and that is not a good feeling at all. I ended up having to use hockey tape for added support and security.

Can cast anything from under 1oz to any huge bait on the market basically.
Pulled in big stripers and big blues.
But also sensitive enough to fish for scup.

Broke at the 70/30 split on 4th outing at the canal

I chose this rod based on reviews and St Croix's reputation, but rather disappointed with this rod as it snapped cleanly at the 70/30 split after hooking up on a striper at Cape Cod Canal. Rod is barely 3 months old and only used 4 times. I have this paired with a Gosa 10k reel and it easily casts to the middle third of the canal with the right lure, but not impressed with the durability so far. I have a warranty claim started - I'll post more when St Croix responds.

Bought my 12 foot 5 years ago from Tackle Direct and registered the rod. While cleaning gear, 3 of the eyes popped out. I called St. Croix and they are sending me a new top section. Very cool.

It was great for the short time that it lasted. Unfortunately it doubled over on a cast and I’ve since upgraded. I would definitely recommend spending a bit more on an Avid Surf.

A rod that can be used for both surf and boat are hard to come by a 7 foot length is great for a boat but anything really longer like the 8 foot is just to long but would be a good choice for the surf. A 7'6" length rod will probably be your best all around length something in a mh-fast action.

If you are fishing a rocky or heavy structured area I would recommend the 6000 for more stopping power, preventing your fish of getting you hung up in the structure. If this is not a concern then the 4000 would do just fine and be a little more lightweight and comfortable to cast all day!

I would recommend the 4000 size reel in most cases. Unless you are fishing rocky or heavy structure areas and you don't want your fish to pull drag then the 6000 would be preferred!

Many newer generation surf rods are using much smaller guides than older surf rods. The reason for this is that the majority of surf fisherman are now using braided lines that are much smaller in diameter, therefore the oversized initial guide is not necessary.

Yes, this case can easily handle the Mojo surf and the VS200. The Mojo Surf 9' breaks down into a 6' and 3' lengths. So when it is broken down into two pieces it is still short enough to fit in the Plano 4254 case.

The rod breaks down into a 3' length and a 6' length. The 3' length is the handle and the 6' includes the guides to the tip.

Hows the casting distance on this rod? Which plug would you say it throws best, a 2oz or 3oz?

The casting distance of the Mojo series is phenomenal thanks to the easy load of the rod paired with their low rider guides. If I were looking for a rod longer than 10' and was going to be throwing closer to 3oz's more often than 2oz's I would go with the "SCR-1029" MSS106MHMF2. If 10' was long enough than I would choose the "SCR-1027" MSS100MMF2.
