Got Bunker?
February 11, 2018
Bunker are back in big numbers. Big fish are on them up and down the Atlantic coast. This snag will put them in your live well or right into a king size striper's mouth. Great product to have handy!
Pros
  • Good weight for casting. Big hooks for snagging.

SFP-SH6, SH7, SH8, etc through SH12 ... what are the corresponding weights (oz)? I went striper fishing for the first time over Veterans Day out of Belmar, NJ. Day trip made the first stop of the day to snag bunker. Boat had us using our 6oz diamond jigs to snag and it was the stupidest thing I've ever done, compared to the guy four over who was using a weighted treble to snag on every drop (compared to my snag 1 of 6). I should have asked him what size he was using (conditions: offshore, 15'-30' water depth, 12" bunker), but I didn't. I want a few, but don't know the appropriate sizes. Thanks for the help. Please also advise, should I be fishing with the same weighted treble I'm looking to snag bunker on? Targeted fish are striped bass and gator blues. 12lb to 30lb+. I don't need to use the weighted trebles to target the bass/blues with, I know people will use them to snag, then transfer the bunker to another rig. I also understand people will snag, leave the fish in the water dragging the weighted treble around, and just hold for the hit with the same hook used for snagging. In NY/NJ waters, snagging is legal and while I appreciate the increases risk of gut hooks, I'm interested in both applications. Weighted trebles for just snagging bait (priority) and would consider using for direct fishing too. Thank you for the guidance!

Shannon, Hello i recommend going with a 8/0-10/0 size weighted treble hook to snag bunker. You could also use the same size snag hook to snag and drop which means snag the bunker and drop back. If you were going to re rig the bunker i would suggest going with a 2-3ft 50lb mono leader to a 9/0 gamakatsu hook GAM-0023. Using a fish finder style rig with about 2-4 ounces weight.
