Catch mackerel, tuna and other big game with the lightweight power and solid construction of these star-drag conventional reels. Shimano Torium Star Drag Reels are new to Shimano's Torium series reels. They are compact, rigid and powerful saltwater conventional reels with excellent castability and durability - a must for saltwater. Many top anglers use them bottom fishing or live-bait fishing as they are built for these extreme applications.

The Shimano Torium Star Drag comes in nearly a dozen models to find the perfect conventional reel. TackleDirect has right-hand and left-hand models with either an egg handle or power handle and several gear ratio options. All of them have specially treated anti-rust bearings and cross carbon drag that both result in the smoothest runs you've experienced. There's nothing conventional about this reel that comes with a satisfaction guarantee. Call or email us with any product questions.

Shimano Torium Star Drag Conventional Reel Features:

  • S Compact Body: Power, rigidity, durability results in a reel that feels one size smaller in your hand. The B-side sideplate is all one piece, contributing to both rigidity and in-the-hand palming comfort. The A-side sideplate has the handle, drag adjustment and cast control knob.
  • E.I.: This is the second layer of surface treatment that is added after the anodizing process. This treatment is forced into any micro-sized surface impurities, giving salt no place to adhere thus preventing corrosion.
  • Cross Carbon Drag: The ideal material for the high drag pressure setting, with smoothness and consistent performance.

Fantastic Value. Fantastic Jigging Reel
January 5, 2022
I've owned a second-hand torium 16PG for over a year now and have caught yellowfin tuna up to 70lb on it as well as some sharks in the 80-90lb range with no issues. I love it for slow jigging. I recently bought a torium 14HG from tackledirect and love it even more. It holds 990' of 50lb jbraid- the spool is a little overfilled but 900' would be perfect. The drag is plenty to handle large red snapper, grouper, and medium sized tuna. It fits in my hand easily and the handle is comfortable. I like it much better than the valiant terns and valiant narrows that my friends use. Highly recommend.
Pros
  • relatively low price
  • small and light weight
  • smooth drag
  • suuuper fast retrieve
Cons
  • none yet

How has this version different from the prior silver/gold one (aside from cosmetics)?

Thanks

1 Answer
Hi Brian, The main differences are 1) Shimano's S-Compact Body: the B-side plate is much smaller and more manageable for anglers to palm the reel so that they can control the fish in critical situation, 2) E.I. Technology which is a second additional layer of surface treatment added onto the reel after the anodizing process providing a extra layer of corrosion resistance, 3) Hagane Body which is a metal reel body that eliminates body flexing and adds strength to the reel. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

I'm new to the sport considering I've been fishing over 20 years. My question is the gear ratio. Which is the best I see several for this reel. I am the weekend angler that catches bottom fish like porgy, ling, black sea bass etc.
1 Answer
Shaun,

For the type of fishing you are doing, I would recommend the 6.2:1 gear ratio.  This will allow you to be able to get the fish off the bottom faster with more inches per turn of the handle.  The size of the reel would be based on the rod you are looking to put it on.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Buying a Torium 20 PGA.  Looking for a grouper rod w a sensative tip, that can pull a 40 lb grouper off structure, but is also fun to fish if catching smaller bottom species.  Will be fishing w 50 or 65 # braid w 60# fluoro topshot.  Looking for a rod in the 7-8' length, newer tech (no 10 year old blank technology), preferably not too heavy.  Can you recommend a high priced and moderately priced option..  Thanks.
1 Answer
For a moderately priced option, I would recommend going with the St. Croix MSWC70MHF Mojo Salt Conventional Rod. This rod is MH power and would be a great overall grouper/bottom fishing rod. It would have the backbone you need to get fish out of heavy structure, but also still sensitive enough for smaller species such as snapper and grunts. A higher priced option would be the Star Rods VB2040C70 Boat Conventional Rod, which would share similar ratings with the Mojo Salt, but has higher quality blank components.

What are the main differences between the 20hga and the 16hga? And what. Size shimano trevala would you pair each with  for bottom fishing?
1 Answer
Overall, the main difference between the 16HGA and the 20HGA is that the 20 has a larger spool and thus, more line capacity. Other than that, both reels are very similar in terms of weight, max drag, and gear ratio. The 6'6" MH Trevala should match up nicely with both reels.

Which is a better match?

Is there much of a size difference between the two?

Very little difference between the two, just a wider spool on the 30 for more line capacity. Probably best to go with the 30 to increase your line capacity if you plan on using for tuna in addition to bottom fishing.

Wes, I would recommend Torium 20 for 50 lbs line. It has more than enough line capacity for what you are trying to do.
