Catch mackerel, tuna and other big game with the lightweight power and solid construction of these star-drag conventional reels. Shimano Torium Star Drag Reels are new to Shimano's Torium series reels. They are compact, rigid and powerful saltwater conventional reels with excellent castability and durability - a must for saltwater. Many top anglers use them bottom fishing or live-bait fishing as they are built for these extreme applications.

The Shimano Torium Star Drag comes in nearly a dozen models to find the perfect conventional reel. TackleDirect has right-hand and left-hand models with either an egg handle or power handle and several gear ratio options. All of them have specially treated anti-rust bearings and cross carbon drag that both result in the smoothest runs you've experienced. There's nothing conventional about this reel that comes with a satisfaction guarantee. Call or email us with any product questions.

Shimano Torium Star Drag Conventional Reel Features:

  • S Compact Body: Power, rigidity, durability results in a reel that feels one size smaller in your hand. The B-side sideplate is all one piece, contributing to both rigidity and in-the-hand palming comfort. The A-side sideplate has the handle, drag adjustment and cast control knob.
  • E.I.: This is the second layer of surface treatment that is added after the anodizing process. This treatment is forced into any micro-sized surface impurities, giving salt no place to adhere thus preventing corrosion.
  • Cross Carbon Drag: The ideal material for the high drag pressure setting, with smoothness and consistent performance.

Great Tog Reel
March 14, 2022
Bought this reel to team up with the Jigging World Black Demon as my go to Tog set up. It performed beautifully on my PB Tog so far 8#. This was boated in 120 feet of water on a big tug wreck and the reel had the power to pull it out of the rubble
Thank you

Fantastic Value. Fantastic Jigging Reel
January 5, 2022
I've owned a second-hand torium 16PG for over a year now and have caught yellowfin tuna up to 70lb on it as well as some sharks in the 80-90lb range with no issues. I love it for slow jigging. I recently bought a torium 14HG from tackledirect and love it even more. It holds 990' of 50lb jbraid- the spool is a little overfilled but 900' would be perfect. The drag is plenty to handle large red snapper, grouper, and medium sized tuna. It fits in my hand easily and the handle is comfortable. I like it much better than the valiant terns and valiant narrows that my friends use. Highly recommend.
Pros
  • relatively low price
  • small and light weight
  • smooth drag
  • suuuper fast retrieve
Cons
  • none yet

Nice reel, going to use it on a slow pitch rod. Star drag seemed a bit loose, sent it to Shimano just to check and it’s in spec.

I have a GLoomis MUR844C/7’ medium (Fast action) 17-40 lb Muskie Med. Action, that I want to match this reel with. I fish for stripers, fluke, & blackfish in the north, and cobia & grouper in the south.  Is this reel a good match?  If not, what would be?
1 Answer
Pete,

To pair your GLoomis 7' Musky rod and the Shimano Torium 16HG, that will definitely work for what you are targeting both north and south.  You can also pair with the Torium 14HG as this will save over 3oz in weight and hold plenty of 30-50lb braid.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

mauriciorpo03@hotmail.com I just came from a fishing trip to Colombian Pacific Oceans. Lots of yellowfin tunas in 40 to 50 pounds range. Some Dorados of 30 pounds and sailfish of 90 - 100. My equipment is very old and heavy. Senator 114H and a rod Senator special. I was very tired after each fight.I need to replace my old equipment for a new one. First question is Conventional or Spinning? Most of the time we fish with live baits from the boat but we trolling lures as well and some times slow jigging for Cubera snappers and groupers. My budget is $400 - 500 for the reel and the rod. I will use Power Pro to spool the reel. If Conventional I will buy a Torium 16HGA, If Spinning a Daiwa Saltist 4500H. I want a light equipment. What do you think about? Conventional or Spinning. Additionally can you recommend a rod to match each reel??? I will appreciate your advice.
1 Answer
Conventional over spinning for the fish that your targeting. The Torium 16HGA would be a good fit with a Shimano TFS63MH Trevala F 6'3" Med Heavy Spinning.
