Great rod for the money.
June 3, 2018
I have paired a MH 7.5 and a MH 7 foot with Tranx 400 reels, and they are about perfect for trolling and casting for king mackerel from my kayak. Once I can buy a couple more of these setups, I intend to leave my heavier tackle at home unless I plan to bottom fish next to the oil rigs.
Pros
  • Tough, good price, fairly light weight.
Cons
  • None.

Great rod for the money
May 26, 2017
This is my second TMS MH rod. It is a great rod for the money. My 4 year old rod is 7'6" I bought it for slip cork fishing and throwing top water lures. I am hoping the shorter rod will be my new favorite for working a Cajun Thunder, twitch baits and heavy jigs in deep water. I haven't used it enough to decide on the shorter length.

Both rods are matching with Shimano Ci4 using 20# braid. They can stop almost anything I catch in the Intracoastal waterway here in NE FL/Jacksonville. I have caught redfish up to 38" in a foot of water.

A medium heavy action combined with a fast action tip is gentle enough to toss live bait a mile and not tear it up. It will also sling a top water plug or Bomber Long A with tremendous accuracy. Flats fishing is about hitting the target. These rods are great.

I also carry two T Allen high carbon micro guide 7'8" medium action with extra fast tips. They are the most sensitive rods I have ever seen. I use them for 1/8 jigs and lately an Unfair Advantage shrimp.

Both rods are also paired with Shimano Ci4 2500 and 10# braid. The rod is more than double the cost of my Teramar. They will cast a tiny weight across town! I use them the most. If a fish taps your lure it's like getting slapped in the hand amazing sensitivity.

The last rod on my boat is a Star Rod - Plasma 7' heavy action with 20# braid. It is rated for baits up to 2oz but can handle double that if bottom fishing.

I use it for soaking blue crab pieces for redfish, big live mullet and trolling. The rod is a beast and doesn't cast very well it's too stiff and too short. It works very well in specific circumstances.

All my rods are one piece. I am old enough to need hi-viz line. I get out two or three times a week.

Fish don't fear me....

Pros
  • Great price very durable.
Cons
  • My 4 year old rod is showing some rust on eyes. I fish only saltwater. They are rinsed off 95% of the time.

la mejor para orilla (the best for shore)
August 10, 2022
(what else can be said about shimano teramar, for the price it is one of the best options for shore fishing, the first time I used it I feasted on 15 jack mackerel catches between 4 and 5 kg, it is very versatile since you can cast from 3/4 oz rubbers, 1.5 oz walking lures to jigs and without getting tired since it has the right weight.)

Go to boat rod for New England inshore
April 21, 2022
I have a couple of these rods on the boat, and they have been great. Paired with a decent reel, these rods have the backbone to take 40#+ stripers without feeling undergunned. I use these to cast everything from small Jumpin' Minnows to the big 9' Docs - they're able to cast both, and work the lures nicely back to the boat.

I leave these out in the elements for most of the season, and they've held up nicely. Would definitely purchase again.

Thank god for Shimano…and Tackle Direct…
October 21, 2021
I fish every day…jacks, snook, reds, blue fish and sharks off my dock in a canal which leads to Ponce Inlet…my mancave has enough equipment to take an entire football team fishing…
But what excites me most is my four new Teramar rods, 7 and 8 foot medium heavy for 1/2 fo 2 ounce lures…
Yesterday my new Thunnus 8000 reels arrived which I paired with the 8 footer MH Teramar rods and almost new Stradic 5000’s paired with the 7 footers…all new 40 pound Power Pro from my new 1500 yard spool…almost heaven is all I can say…my old Baitrunner 3500 and 4500 at 25 years work fine but all things must pass…
At 72, I decided it was time to buy my last new spinning reels…grandson recently earned his Captains license and today we will fish:my new Pathfinder! Life is good…I expect to catch some bull reds, snook and Jacks today…
Thanks to Tackle Direct for making it happen so smoothly as usual!
Pros
  • For 32 years, fishing saltwater daily, Shimano has never failed me?
Cons
  • I just retired a 30 year old Stratic 4000?my repair guy said it?s time?remember, I use these tools two to three times per day?that?s a thousand times per year?sad to see the old reel retire, but these new rods and reels get me more excited than new equipment I bought over 60 years ago?by the way, the old equipment still work fine due to great engineering and manufacturing?

The Teramar is such a great combination of power and finesse. I love the extra fast action the rod has, yet it has backbone to handle big, tough fish. This rod way outperforms it's price.

Nice Rod!
March 7, 2021
Very nice rod for the $, comparable to some others I have costing twice as much. Paired the TMS-70MH with a Shimano Baitrunner 4000d and 20lb braid. Works great for nearshore live baiting and even for pitching to schoolie dolphin.

Is this rod good for some light tuna?yellowfin?
1 Answer
Hi Jesse, The Shimano Teramar Southeast Inshore Spinning Rod TMSX80XH would be a little light for offshore fishing applications. Instead I would recommend a Shimano TLXS69MH Tallus PX Spinning Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-tlxs69mh-tallus-px-spinning-rod.html This would be great for targeting small school yellowfin tuna and other pelagic species. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

What weight of reel for this rod ? Thanks in advance
1 Answer
Hi Carlos, I would recommend using a 4000 - 6000 size reel that weighs anywhere between 9oz - 15oz. However since that rod is sold out I would also recommend the Shimano TMS-80H Teramar Inshore Southeast Spinning Rod. Model: TMS-80H; TD Code: SHM-0399. https://www.tackledirect.com/tms80h.html This rod is also a Heavy Fast Action 8ft rod that will be ideal for fishing various species. This would also pair great with a Shimano STC5000XGFL Stradic FL Spinning Reel. Specifically Model: STC5000XGFL; TD Code: SHM-3812. https://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-stc5000xgfl-stradic-fl-spinning-reel.html This is strong but lightweight reel that can be used for various fishing applications. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Would a Penn Spinfisher 5500 or 6500 with 50lb braid be better for the XH model?

I would recommending going with the 5500 mainly because of the weight of the reel with that size rod.
