Great fighting rod but not a great spinning rod
August 14, 2020
I have fought some good size fish on this rod and it handles it fantastically. This makes a great jigging spinner rod. It works beautifully for slow or fast pitch jigging but not great as a spinning rod. Its a rod that can also cast. The guides are too small and the fast action doesn't allow for enough mid rod flex to get a good whip that you need to cast a long distance.
To give you an example I can cast further on my Ugly stick 4' micro rod using a 1.5 oz deadly dick lure, by double then I can with anything with this rod.

Don't get me wrong. This is a beautiful rod that fights fish great and has the power to pull in 100# tuna but if you gotta cast far to them then this is not it.
Pros
  • Strong back bone to fight big fish.
Cons
  • Poor casting distance.

The rod is great enough for me to use for Striper and Rockfish. Also, strong enough for fishing Halibut. As right now am using for 3 setup.

TLS80HBBL - Excellent Medium Duty Stick
June 6, 2019
This rod can do a lot of work for striper, cod, deep drop, schoolie tuna, and bluefish applications. Feels very sturdy and worthy of bigger game, but is not a total pool cue. Love the grooved fore grip, also showcased in the Terez lineup. Very happy with this rod. The possibilities are endless.
Pros
  • Stout
  • Comfortable Grip

  • Strong Backbone

Excelllent rod! Probably the best rod under $200. Sensitive enough to pull progies and flounders, strong enough to pull tautogs, stripers, and blue fishes. Highly recommended!!!!

I'm looking for a tarpon rod to go with a Quantum Boca 8000 reel.  Is the 8' heavy or medium heavy better or is there a better rod?
1 Answer
Its really going to depend on the size tarpon your are targeting. If you are targeting large tarpon 120lbs+ you should choose the 8' heavy rod which will give you some power over the fish. If the tarpon you are targeting are going to be smaller than that I would actually recommend Shimano TLS72MHBBL Tallus Blue Water Spinning Rod this will be comfortable for constant casting and lessen fatigue for you. This same setup could be used to catch larger tarpon but you may find yourself fighting the larger fish for a decent period of time.

Can i use this to cast popers, stickbaits, and metal lures? In addition is it good if I pare this rod with a shimano spheros 20000?
1 Answer
While this rod would work for that application we highly recommend going with a Shimano Terez (http://www.tackledirect.com/shimano-tzs78hblk-terez-spinning-rod-black.html) if the main purpose of the rod is going to be casting lures. While the Stella 20k will work for this application as welll we highly recommend going with the 18k. The 18k is the same size reel but with a faster gear ratio in order to gather slack line quicker after your cast. This also make it easier to work and place some of your baits. -Paul
