Multipurpose rod
August 13, 2021
Purchased this rod and paired it with a pen torque 300. It performs flawlessly when jigging for bluefin tuna and have caught fish up to 60” on it. It also is sensitive enough that it works well as a bottom fishing rod for cod and haddock. Even found a needle in a haystack and hooked a 200 pound class Thresher vertical jigging for cod and this rod had more than enough to do battle.
Pros
  • Extremely light
Cons
  • Would prefer a stranger reel seat but with a reel clamp installed it?s a non issue.

Hi, I primarily fish out of South Carolina in the spring and summer months. Offshore, we mainly reel in large mackerel, jack crevalle, tarpon, sometimes tuna, and an overwhelming variety of medium-large sized sharks. I was wondering if you believed this rod would handle fish 65-130lbs well and if so which model? Thanks in advance.

The 6'6' heavy would be a good choice for a variety of fish

Hello, I'm interested in the shimano tallus 80 size rod. I frequent partyboat trips out of Florida throughout the year. I'm a big fan of the shimano trevala series, which I have 3 models, and enjoy them. But, it seems to be a little short for party boats, my belief is, I would have better hook sets and it will be easier to get snappers into the boat with a taller rod. I see the west coast using 8ft rods for long range trips and shimano even has a westcoast rod. So, shouldn't I be able to use the tallus 80 size rod with a talica 16 for bottom fishing? What are your thoughts?
1 Answer
No reason you can't use a 8 foot rod it will give you a little more control over the fish once hooked.

Do the heavy and extra heavy models come with an aluminum reel seat?

What is the difference between Tallus and Trevala? Trevala is advertised as a jigging rod but on paper many of the models appear exactly the same between Trevala and Tallus. Are there any differences in the blanks and rod components?

Intending to use for grouper and amberjack with a Speedmaster 12ii. Go 6’6†heavy or extra heavy?

1 Answer
The Tallus does feature an aluminum Shimano reel seat, I would recommend the 6'6" heavy as it matches your reel best. The main differences in the Tallus and Trevala will be that the Trevala was made with specifically jigging in mind. The Custom shaped EVA foregrip and reargrip for comfort and balance while jigging makes it ideal for jigging and the other difference will be the guides: The Trevala has new Concept Fuji Alconite and Fuji Hardloy guides wjile the Tallus has New Concept Fuji Alconite and Fuji Hardloy guides.

Just picked up a Penn Squall 60LD. Going to spoil with 80 PowerPro braid. Like to match up with a Tallus for snapper, grouper, mahi, yellow fin, cobia , kingfish, mackerel, black fin. Expect to fish from party boats starting out, but take on charter boats as well  And another trip up to BC-Queen Charlottes for Chinnook and Halibut. So am I better with a 6.6, 7, or larger?  MH, H, or extra H. Appreciate your recommendations and rationale.
1 Answer
The Squall 60LD is a large reel so it will need a Heavy or Extra Heavy rod to pair with.

The 6'6" and 7' heavy options are definitely solid options and they are rated to handle 80 lb braid. It will be overkill for some of the species you're after but with that reel you'll need a heavy action rod atleast.

These are conventional rods, you will want to check out the spinning version of the same rod and the Heavy would be best paired up with the BG6500:

Ed, that is an excellent reel for that type of fishing, I would recommend a Shimano Terez Slick Butt Stand-Up Ring Guide Rods. You want to go with a 5'9" rod if you are fishing on a boat with inboard motors, Or the 6'6" if your fishing on a boat with out board motors both in a Medium Heavy Action.
