Built with Southeastern anglers in mind, the Shimano Talavera Bluewater Slick Butt Conventional Rods offer technique specific performance at a price that all offshore anglers can appreciate. Tailor made for light line-trolling applications like sailfish and kingfish, this series is built on blanks with ideal lengths and tapers for pulling circle hook rigs on light monofilament lines at low drag settings. These rods feature a slick butt handle for quick and easy removal from rod holders and are fitted with an aluminum gimbal that securely locks into rod holders and fighting belts. Equipped with durable Fuji Aluminum Oxide guides, these rods can be effectively fished with both monofilament and braided lines. While this series is built to satisfy the needs of Southeastern trollers, anglers in several other fisheries will find them useful for applications such as white marlin fishing or any other circumstance where a longer, lighter powered trolling rod is preferred.

Hello: I am putting together a set of 5-6 rods/reels that I plan to use for live-bait applications (kingfish, dolphin, sailfish, wahoo, and blackfin tuna --with possibly a few yellowfins thrown in) offshore of Southport NC, along the inner edge of the Gulfstream. The rods will all be fitted with Avet LX reels filled with 30lb mono. Strike drag will be set to 9lbs. I already have 3 Penn Torque Gamefish TG2040C70 rods that I bought years ago (but have never used). The Torque's are rated for 20lb-40lb Mono, are 7'0" in length, and have a slower parabolic bend when loaded. They also have the heavier Fuji graphite rod seats, a Slick Butt, an 11" or so EVA foregrip, and a hard rubber gimbal. I know I'll never be able to match them exactly (color, guides, wrapping, etc.) but I would at least like the 2-3 new rods I need to be very similar from a functional point of view. So, would the Shimano TEBC70MSBA Talavera Bluewater Slick Butt Conventional Rod (rated for 15lb-30lb Mono) be a reasonable match for the Torque's in terms of line handling capability and action? Thanks, Harry J.

Harry,

The Shimano Talavera Bluewater Slick Butt rod TEBC70MSBA would be the most comparable of the Talavera Bluewater rods to those discontinued Penn Torque rods.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
