I bought this for a 6’ St Croix UL Premier. It’s a good fit.
Pros
  • Smooth operation
Cons
  • It?s a little heavy. If you want a trigger reel a bit lighter get the Syncopate.

Great Reel

I love these reels for trolling Walleye and casting for LMB and SMB. Awesome casting ability. The trigger makes the ability for multiple quick casts with extreme accuracy.
On the trolling factor, it allows to set up the strike zone, then flipping the drag lever allows to tighten the drag for the fight.
My favorite Shimano is my 37 year old 200Q mounted on my Mitchell Tradition Graphite cork handle which I broke the tip off the rod when I put it in the back of that old truck. I still use it today for general and/or under fallen trees/brush.
Pros
  • Variable drag zone. Shimano's superior quality and dependability.
Cons
  • Easy to overcome the less than optimal reel to rod mount strength. Just work the rod/reel in a vertical position using the crank and pump style retrieve with the line straight in front of you.. Pulling a sideways retrieve, as when performing a flipping style cast, will show you that you are not using a bait caster style mounted reel.

Fishing in Florida, my reels take a beating. I bought the Spirex because of the line cast ability. After years of fishing for bull reds, black drum, and trout, this reel has never let me down. It holds its own against my Fin nor Lethal and Spinfisher VI. The small handle is great for quick casting, but gives up some cranking ability on the bigger fish. It's also a heavier retrieve than similar sized reels. The gears and bearings have held up extremely well also. It's a quirky reel that some people might not like, but I love it and go out of my way to use it often.
Pros
  • Bullet proof. Great for casting jigs and crankbaits. Saltwater proven against my higher end reels (Finnor Lethal, Spinfisher VI, Stradic, Battle), Body and paint has held up very well. I've used for about 5 years with no issues.
Cons
  • Small handle hinders horsing in the biggest reds - limited torque.

Itchy trigger finger?... Problem solved!
May 21, 2020
Bought the whole set! Was glad to see Shimano was still producing these spinning reels with the Quickfire II trigger release. I got a set of Shimano TX reels with the original Quickfire triggers when I was a kid and fell in love with them. The Spirex series is a very nice upgrade from the discontinued TX models.

weak stem broken reels
May 19, 2019
I own 7 reels from shimano 3 are broken 1 is just wore out. i have always loved the quick fire.L astt yr i bought a syncpate only to have its stem snap while landing a 2 lb bass. ok so i replaced it. and it happened again. my next replacement was not shimano. until i see a more sturdy stem i will not waste my money again. these clearly have no strength. both were less than 3 lbs. shimano i hope you see this and correct ill miss the quickfire

Great "BUT"
September 28, 2018
I have been using these for years because of the "quick fire". I feel I get about 20% more cast in a day and that accounts for more fish. It is a good reel for the price.

Now for the "BUT" part. The frames arm, from the reel to the rod seat, on the 1000 & 2500 class are weak and will twist back and forth on large fish. We have broken several of them on larger fish and they will twist and flex back and forth as you try and reel in a larger fish. Just caught 20# King Salmon on a 2500 and thought for sure the reel armature was going to snap off the way it was twisting back and forth. FYI, I was fishing for 5-9# Coho's at the time so I had the correct size reel. Still they need to beef up the arm between the reel ans rod seat.
Pros
  • Best "Quick Fire" available
  • 20% more cast
Cons
  • WEAK, WEAK, WEAK frame.

Does anyone make a bail-less ultralight reel?
1 Answer
Hi John, The Van Staal VR series would be your best option to have the lightest and smallest bailess reel model available. https://www.tackledirect.com/van-staal-vr-series-spinning-reels.html Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

What rod and power is best with shimano spirex fg 2500?
1 Answer
The power depends more on how you are fishing and what you are fishing for. But, since the reel is a smaller size reel usually it is paired with a 6 ft - 7 ft size rod, with a Ultra Light, Light or Medium power.
