The Shimano Ocea Plugger Flex Limited Spinning rods combine Spiral X and Hi Power X blank construction technology. This Spiral X construction provides for reinforced blank strength and torsional rigidity. These Shimano rods are lightweight in design. Hi-power X-construction eliminates blank twist, which means longer casting distances and exceptional casting accuracy. These rods were created for casting Shimano's Orca pencil baits and poppers and other entice them on top species. The Shimano Ocea Plugger rods feature Fuji tangle free SiC K guides adding to increased casting distance.

Great Performance
January 4, 2019
Received Medium action rod 3 days ago; was very happy with it's craftsmanship and looks. I was a bit skeptical whether or not it would be up to the job tackling migrator amberjack that crest the southern tip of South Korea this time of year; heading to feeding grounds somewhere along the Aus. coastal waters. I opted for the Penn Slammer III just because I wanted the speed (59" per turn) I've utilized other twin powers for the job but, just got followers and no strikes. About 12 casts ripping a topwater plug the water boiled and the fight was on...... The rod performance was fantastic; straining to immense power of whatever was on the end of my line. With a lot of oh's, ah's as I put the rod into near breaking point flex I finally better my query. A 51lb Golden stripped Amberjack. A stunning species and great fighter. I would have posted a pic but phone is entertaining the bottom dwellers at about 37 meters.
Pros
  • Although the eyelet bindings are a bit thick, presenting a ever so slight hump appearance; This rod performed better than my NS Blackhole of comparable weight hands down.
Cons
  • Don't know what the brown strap that accompanied the rod is; instruction all in Japanese (who cares though)

Shimano Ocea Plugger 8'6"

I fish this rod for west coast species on surface irons and jig/swimbait combos as well as throwing musky plugs in the midwest. It is an absolute cannon capable of bombing super long casts with large lures. My only suggestion is to specify that the 2-piece split in the rod is at the top of the handle rather than in the blank

This rod is absolutely amazing! Anyone who has ever used a Terez rod knows how thin, light and yet powerful they are. Well, this rod takes all that to a new level. I have used other popping rods in the past that not only felt heavy but stiff as well. This Ocea rod is so light that it will leave you wondering if its going to break under heavy pressure. It has a nice moderate tip which allows you to make great casts and work any lure as you wish. But its when this rod gets punched in the jaw by a big fish that its true colors come out. I have used this rod on large Tuna, big beach Tarpon, Sharks and anything else I have been able to hook into and this rod has slayed them all. The power of the 83H in particular is that of the Greek gods. If Zeus ever fished, this was the rod he used. I have purchased a Game Type J which utilizes this new blank construction and can't wait to try it out as well. Its pricey but worth every penny!
Pros
  • - Light yet powerful blank construction.
  • - Beautiful Rod
  • - 2 Piece design makes it easy to travel with.
  • - Comes with a high quality rod sack and straps.
Cons
  • Shimano might as well have direct access to my bank account.

I'm wonder how the OPFLSLTD83H matches up with a Penn TorqueS9BL spooled with 80# Maxquatro for reef donkeys and BFT. I'm looking for a setup that will handle everything short of Giants...am I close? Also, would I be better off with a bailed Torque9 I heard they had problems with the rotor arm? I'm breaking the bank, so I want to get this right.
1 Answer
The Torque paired with the Ocea Plugger would make a great setup for handling most species paired with maxquatro which will give you plenty of line capacity. The bailess model would be your best bet if you're doing alot of casting.

1 Answer
The Shimano Ocea Plugger Flex Limited Spinning Rods are split at the handle.

Which would be the better option for popping in the surf for Tarpon, 8'3" Heavy or Medium Heavy?
1 Answer
I would choose the 8'3 Heavy. Especially with fishing for Tarpon, it is better to be safe than sorry with the ability to use a heavier pound test line, and heavier power in the back bone of the rod to turn their heads when you hook into heavier fish.

Is an 8' Med. too much for a Twin Power 5000 with 40lbs. line or is it a perfect match?
1 Answer
I think that that reel would work on the rod, but my preference would be the larger sizes of that model, such as a 6000 or 8000. That would also depend on what you are fishing for. Also, I would not recommend putting 40lb braid on a 5000 size Twinpower. You are only going to get around 175 yards of line on there, which is really not enough if you get something like a wind knot or break.

Would a Saragossa 10000 be a good match for the MH version of this model fair some sailfish?
1 Answer
The Saragosa and this rod would be a great match for what you are trying to fish for. You could even go smaller with the reel if you like, if you wanted to fish with light tackle.
