The Shimano Game Type J Saltwater Jigging Rods combine Spiral X and Hi Power X blank construction technology. This Spiral X construction provides for reinforced blank strength and torsional rigidity. These Shimano rods are lightweight in design. Hi-power X-construction eliminates blank twist, which means longer casting distances and exceptional casting accuracy. These Shimano rods were designed to fish Shimano butterfly and other vertical drop jigs when targeting tuna, grouper, snapper, and sea bass. These rods feature CI4+ material reel seats thus providing more power and sensitivity.

A very good jigging rod
March 11, 2021
I bought this rod for local rockfish jigging in SoCal. I was originally concerned about it lacking backbone especially because of the new depth restrictions because took it out last Sunday and it held up perfectly jigging with a 200 gram flatfall jig for big rockfish in 400+ft. The only slight problem I can see is that you can't really cast a heavy jig up current which you sometimes have to do when rockfish jigging in SoCal. Other than that, the rod is super light and comfortable to fish with.
Pros
  • super light weight
  • good backbone
Cons
  • can't cast a jig up current

Great Rod

Great light rod for bottom fishing, you can feel everything on this with 30-40# straight braid. Plenty of backbone to pull in big Lings and Hailbut. I hear it works well for free fall jigging for Yellowtail and Tuna but haven't tried that yet.

It is a good rod

It is a good rod, but 2014 models are one generation older JDM technology.
I am kind of disappointed. 2017 model Game Type LJ JDM rod has newer spiral x and hi-power x technology.

Anyway, overall, it is one of the best rods in the US market.
I would still buy Game Type J over Major Craft Major Craft Giant Killing.

Absolute beast

I have paired mine with a saragosa 10k loaded with 50lb j braid. This past week I had the chance to take it out to jig up some 35-45lb amberjack and a small Goliath grouper estimated to 60+ lbs. The tip of the rod is super sensitive and responsive. You can feel even the lightest of swipes by lesser species, but the backbone on this thing is where it's really impressive. You can feel the rod work under load throughout the entire blank. Under heavy drag and lots of pressure battling these fish your back will thank you for spending the extra coin. I have terez and trevala rods that are absolutely great for what they are but they are nothing compared to this. Shimano did one hell of a job!

What are the differences between this old model and the 2021 model? Please help.
1 Answer
The H-XXH models on the 2021 models have a Fuji reel seat paired with Fuji SiC guides, as opposed to the CI4+ reel seats on all of the older models. Shimano has also improved on the overall blank of the 2021 models as well. The 2021 models were also designed to be better suited for slow-pitch jigging as well.

Candace rod handle 100 pound tuna
1 Answer
100 lbs. may be a little much for this rod, but if you have a reel with enough line capacity, you may be able to get away with it.

Is this the new style rod and is it good for slow pitch jigging?
1 Answer
The new Game Type J rods from Shimano can be found at the link below. Although these are not the slow pitch series of rods, they can most certainly be used for slow pitch jigging.
