lightweight, fun to fish
October 3, 2019
I use this paired with an okuma komodo 471-P for fishing inshore southern california kelp beds/boilers, paddy hopping. Handled 25 lb yellowtail and yellowfin fine. I fish off a private center console. Usually using 20-30# fluoro when using live bait. Lightweight makes it fun to fish all day. Blanks are narrower than the old school Calstar type tuna rods which some people may not like. Used it for live bait, irons, and even dropper loops. Blanks i believe are not from US , but have not had any failures, and the hardware seems solid. Great return policy. If you live in so cal you can just drive over to the phenix warehouse in Bellflower- they'll fix guides for $10, and will replace a damaged rod for a flat reasonable fee or give you credit to change to a different rod/series. Great for the kind of everyday local inshore fishing here in so cal without paying for the super high end gear. I have only been salt fishing for 5 years though so keep that in mind.

Great rod for Shimano Tranx 301
November 25, 2017
I purchased this rod to replace a Powell 3D MagHeavy rod, which could not take the pressure fishing for false albicore. The Powell rod broke after the fourth or fifth albie. The next trip out, I had the Phoenix rod, and it was at least as sensitive and accurate as the Powell, plus it was able to take the pressure. Excellent rod. Highly recommend.
Pros
  • Relatively light. Accurate casts. Very sensitive. Very strong for it's weight and sensitivity.

is rod is amazing, extremely well made, beautiful, extra fast, doing par with a daiwa lexa type-hd and excellent set, which is spoken by the disproportionate size, but I can assure that this is not true.

Awesome Rod
August 7, 2015
I used to only use the shimano teramar rod. well i broke a couple and can no longer get them locally especially since shimano has the 1 year warranty now. Then i decided to order a American Made Rod(Won't name company), but build and ship was taking too long so i canceled and ordered this Phenix rod instead after reading so many reviews online about the company and products. The rod is exceptional and very light. I especially like the carbon fiber reel seat and the phenix custom handle. Cast great and the backbone reeled in a nice 38" red and a 43 lb black ugly. I have it matched with a stradic 5000fj.

My new favorite rod

I'm in love with this rod. Super light weight and plenty strong. I have no problem horsing in Stripers and Gator Blues with this rod. You really have to personally pull on this rod to appreciate it. Also, excellent build quality. I have it paired with a Revo Toro NaCL 61, excellent combo.
Pros
  • strength to weight ratio
Cons
  • none so far

This rod can be used for either small mouth or large mouth bass. The specs would allow you to use some heavier baits like swimbaits.

1 Answer
You'll be ok casting 3/4oz lures, the rod will still load properly.

thinking about getting the smx 73l spinning rod for my Stella 4000. is this a good light tackle combo. I like fast action.

The action on the Phenix rod is fast action and that would be a very well paired light tackle spinning combo.

For a light tackle combo the Phenix SMX 731 rod matched with a Stella 4000 would be a great combo. With the lightweight and fast action your looking for, this combo will have just that and more.

8'2 heavy,,, ok fishermen and women brothers,, this is coming to you from the south! I'm not new yo PBD poles, I have 8 spinning, and ADORE them, I am new to the casting. I want 2 rods that can handle the new world record cat,, about 150 pounds. I know where she is, she's done broke 1 rod and made a fool of me once. Tell me, 8 ft 2 in., Can it handle ,,,65 lb. braid, drifting a 5 inch shad in 65 ft of water ,,, and a very urinated off female??? I've wasted to much $$ on junk, and conventional rods ain't cool. Will this rod handle it before I spend the bucks,? When the clicker drops the nonsense stops,!

Hi all fellow anglers, I'm currently looking at both SMX-82MH, and SMX-82H to pair up with a Shimano TranX. The line rating between both are 15-35 on the MH and 20-45 on the H, are the ratins for Mono or Braid? I'll be mostly fishing on the surf, jetty, and inlets (pretty much inshore) actively casting for Reds, Snook, Jacks, and Tarpons, which of both would suit better for the occasion? Also I NEED to know if the reel seat is big enough to comfortable fit the TranX?? I had the reel paired up with a Waxwing Terez rod and the reel seat was just a bit to small causing the reel to pop out once in a while!
1 Answer
Those ratings are for monofilament. The reel definitely fits in the seat just fine, I just tried it myself. You could go either way with the rod, it is a very solid combo either rod you go with. I would probably go with the lighter model, unless you are catching large tarpon.
