A more advanced edition of the Spinfisher series reels. The Spinfisher V Series spinning reels are made with Penn's new Water Tight Design which protects the reel from saltwater making its way into the gearbox or drag system. The Spinfisher V Series reels have many improved features such as the rubber gasket that keeps superline from slipping. Another great feature is the line capacity rings, so you will always know how much line is left during a tough angling fight.

More Features:
  • New thicker heavy duty aluminum bail wire adds strength and durability
  • 5 Shielded stainless steel bearing system
  • Infinite anti-reverse (back up ratchet on 7500-10500 sizes)
  • Friction trip ramp prevents premature bail trip when casting
  • Stainless steel mainshaft and alloy main gear
  • Triple-supported and oversized stainless steel mainshaft on 9500 and 10500 models
  • Enhanced gear ratios on smaller sizes
  • LL - Live Liner feature for live bait fishing
  • BLS - Bail-less model
  • LC - Long Cast - designed with the avid surf fisherman in mind

I have researched saltwater spinning reels in detail.
When I came upon the 6500 bail less by Penn, there was no further searching. I'm skeptical of other's comments, but there were so many 5 *s, I thought I'd give it a try. Best thing I did. We live in Bonita Springs, Fl. most of the year. This reel is so great. The bail less is the greatest. I took a few casts to familiarize my self with, the technique. But boy it is effortless. What's the first thing to break on a traditional spinning reel? The bail spring, right? Well at least for me. No Bail, no spring .No problem. Highly recommend the bail less model..

I bought them to compare them with the top of the line. I can tell the difference on gear ratios but not by much, they are comparable in my opinion and so far so good.
Pros
  • Great and durable materials, reliable and so far so good. Will keep using it and yes I will buy it again.
Cons
  • No cons so far so good!

While this is shore a workhorse of a reel, it is a big girl and can be cumbersome compare to some slightly more expensive alternatives in class, I use the 10500 for jigging for tuna.

Great, but...
March 29, 2020
It’s a solid reel with quality parts. I do have one complaint with the live line feature. I was hoping that the live sardine could swim out using the bottom drag. I was using 50lb braid and with the complete free setting the sardine was not able to do so. I had to open the bail for the sardine to swim out. I did still caught a few yellow fin tuna but it didn’t work the way I expected it work. I had no problem reeled in the tunas thou.
Pros
  • Solid reel with quality components
Cons
  • Live liner feature didn?t work as expected.

Had the opportunity to use the 5500 series reel fighting 100+ pound tarpon and it held up great. Perfect size for the job. Also used for stripers off the Jersey shore and has held up great through the years.

Best chunk/live bait fishing reel EVER!
March 23, 2020
I fish for Rock Fish (aka Striped Bass) in the Chesapeake Bay and have great success using the Penn Spinfisher 4500LL. The "LL" stands for live lining and means I can set my baits out, flip the live liner switch and sit back waiting for the line to scream off the reel. As soon as you turn the reel handle once, the drag kicks in to where you have it set and you fight the fish. no more adjusting the drag when there's a fish on the line, means more fish in the boat!

I hate the bail-less
February 5, 2020
I thought that it was a cool idea so I had gotten the bail-less model. I've got to tell you, I wish I could change that decision. The reel itself is a very good quality. It stood up to a decent stingray, and hasn't tarnished at all since my saltwater trip. The problem comes when I'm casting. At times the line will find it way into the arm and snap the cast short. My motto for the trip had become "son of a bail-less b****" whenever it snapped the cast short.
Pros
  • good quality
  • Smooth drag
  • Smooth reeling
Cons
  • casting with the bail-less model is very fraustrating

I recently picked up a 6500 from you guys when they were on sale....  time to put it to work.  Plan is to use it as a jigging reel for cobia/AJs/other reef fish.  I know it says it has 30# drag (I dont plan to max that out) but for this application would you reccomend using 50 or 60# braid?  Thanks.  Also what's you're opinion of the rampage Jig (spinning) rod?  is the price too good to be true?
1 Answer
The rampage rods are great rods at a great price and with the 6500 size reel a 50# braid will work just fine

Would the ssv10500 be a good rod for surf fishing for shark around 6ft? And what would be a good rod to go with that reel if so?
1 Answer
The Penn Spinfisher 10500 would be fit for shark fishing from the surf or from a boat. Depending on the where your fishing and how your fishing for sharks will determine the rod. The Tsunami Airwave Elite Surf Series rods are durable rods that provide a lot of backbone. From a boat the Shimano Terez Spinning rods would be a great choice as well. I just purchased a 4500. I am a surf guy and the light weight and water tight seals drove my decision. I noticed upon taking the reel out of the box the unusually close tolerance between the bail and spool in cast mode. When casting I've got to believe that the line will be rubbing on the bail thus impeding to some degree casting distance. Am I all wet on this ?
1 Answer
Hello Bob. This is standard on these reels. You are absolutely correct on the bale being close to the spool at times. With the way the reel is designed this is actually not a concern and will not affect your casting distance. The Spinfisher will treat you very well getting out into the surf where you want to be.

I have a lot of rod and reels and there are some that I only use for a short period of time each year. I would like to use the same reel and/or Rod for two types of fishing if possible. In May and June, I fish Offshore for Dolphin, I need a few spinning combos for throwing plugs at weed patches and chunking cut bait after I get the fish under the boat. In the Fall I fish for Tarpon with dead and live bait. I was thinking that the Spinfisher 6500 may be able to handle both of these types of fishing. What do you think? Do you have a Rod selection that would work for both of these ?

The Spinfisher series spools have a rubber inlay where the first level of line lays. I assume this is to stop braid from slipping on the spool. Others have recommended using an initial layer or so of monofilament to prevent braid from slipping on the spool. Is the rubber inlay sufficient? What do you recommend?
1 Answer
The rubber on these reels is sufficient. You do not need to also use mono backing or tape.. The braid won't slip with this sort of spool.

I am looking to purchase a Penn Spinfisher V sometime soon for striper and and blues in the surf, and will be only using lures . I want to load it with 30lb braid. I want to pair the reel with either my current rod which is a 10'6 St Croix Mojo surf, or an 11 foot Lamiglas GSB blank. So which size Spinfisher V model would you recommend and why ?
1 Answer
Hello Jeffrey, I would recommend you go with the 6500 size Penn Spinfisher V. This size will hold 300 yards of 30 lbs line which is more than enough for fighting big blues and striped bass. It will also have plenty of drag for fighting bigger fish as well. It will be a great match with your Mojo and you will be able to throw lures and or bait all day with this setup.

Do the 6500 and the 5500 have the same body size? Are the differences only the spool sizes? Looking to get the bailless but they only have the 6500 size. I like the 5500 size as it balances well with my rod.
1 Answer
The body sizes are different as well as the spools. You may want to contact Penn to see if they have a bail less conversion kit for the 5500. The phone number is 800-892-5444.

What is the difference between the 7500 and the 7500LC other than line lenght on spool? Does the 7500LC actually have features built-in to allow further casts or is it just the amount of line on the spool that potentially allows for further casts. I am surf casting for stripers at high tide using bait (not live) 80% and throwing plugs the other 20%.
1 Answer
The difference is in the oscillation rate of the bail. It is much slower than than 7500 thus the line lay is much more even. This allows for the line to come off the spool more smoothly and increases the casting distance considerably.

what size reel would the 7500 be? medium, medium heavy? I ask because I want to find a great rod to match the reel. any suggestions on a good match?
1 Answer
Hello! The Spinfisher 7500 is a larger reel that can certainly be used in more medium/heavy applications. A lot of what plays into choosing your rod is what exactly you will be fishing for. We do offer a 7500 combo that can be found here: http://www.tackledirect.com/penn-ssv7500701h-spinfisher-v-spinning-combo.html That pairs the reel with an appropriate rod and comes to your door ready to fish. Please feel free to contact us if you have any more questions!

What size (length) and model of Penn spin casting surf rod should be used with the Penn Spinfisher V SSV7500LC reel?
1 Answer
As for the length, you would want to use at least a 10' rod, maybe up to 12' long. The model really depends on you and how you fish. If you are throwing large plugs or bait, you need a more stout rod than if you are only throwing light weight offerings. What you are fishing for also comes into play. The Penn prevail and the new Battalion rods are both great choices.

Wanting a 6500 but notice that it comes with a jigging rod? does that make a difference. ill be fishing bays and off the pier and jetties. thanks.
2 Answers
The 6500 is available without a rod, if you prefer. A jigging rod is always good to have, but not the best for piers and jetties.
Submitted by: Customer Service on August 21, 2014
They are available either way. Jigging rod or standard spinning.

I have a 4500 and with the striper and bluefish season coming up this fall is this size to light for the surf and on a boat dropping metal? I'm trying to wait until the new Staal comes out, but thats unfortunately not until December so can I get away with the Spinnfisher? Thanks
1 Answer
You can get away with it dropping metals, but for surf fishing, it is small (line capacity).

The 6500LL is a "live liner" or "bait runner" model. The 6500BLS is a "bailless" model. The 6500 is a "normal model.

We would go with the 3500. It has plenty of line capacity and drag to handle what you will run into.

Hi, If we compare the Battle 7000 with Spinfisher v 7500 or 8500 , which one will be better as a performance & durability ? if use it with 11 ft Penn Torque rod for surf casting, wish reel would be better ? Thanks a lot.
1 Answer
For surf fishing dead baits, I would recommend the Spinfisher 7500SSV. This reel is better designed for throwing heavy baits and it a little more HD to handle the surf more than the Battle. If you are looking to throw mostly artificial baits the battle would be better because it is much lighter than the SSV reels.
