I have researched saltwater spinning reels in detail.
When I came upon the 6500 bail less by Penn, there was no further searching. I'm skeptical of other's comments, but there were so many 5 *s, I thought I'd give it a try. Best thing I did. We live in Bonita Springs, Fl. most of the year. This reel is so great. The bail less is the greatest. I took a few casts to familiarize my self with, the technique. But boy it is effortless. What's the first thing to break on a traditional spinning reel? The bail spring, right? Well at least for me. No Bail, no spring .No problem. Highly recommend the bail less model..

Good enough for my local dock hopping for tog or blues/bass but it feels very geary and not smooth. I still enjoy it because it holds a good amount of line has good drag and casts great.

While this is shore a workhorse of a reel, it is a big girl and can be cumbersome compare to some slightly more expensive alternatives in class, I use the 10500 for jigging for tuna.

It’s a solid reel with quality parts. I do have one complaint with the live line feature. I was hoping that the live sardine could swim out using the bottom drag. I was using 50lb braid and with the complete free setting the sardine was not able to do so. I had to open the bail for the sardine to swim out. I did still caught a few yellow fin tuna but it didn’t work the way I expected it work. I had no problem reeled in the tunas thou.

Had the opportunity to use the 5500 series reel fighting 100+ pound tarpon and it held up great. Perfect size for the job. Also used for stripers off the Jersey shore and has held up great through the years.

Best chunk/live bait fishing reel EVER!

I fish for Rock Fish (aka Striped Bass) in the Chesapeake Bay and have great success using the Penn Spinfisher 4500LL. The "LL" stands for live lining and means I can set my baits out, flip the live liner switch and sit back waiting for the line to scream off the reel. As soon as you turn the reel handle once, the drag kicks in to where you have it set and you fight the fish. no more adjusting the drag when there's a fish on the line, means more fish in the boat!

I hate the bail-less

I thought that it was a cool idea so I had gotten the bail-less model. I've got to tell you, I wish I could change that decision. The reel itself is a very good quality. It stood up to a decent stingray, and hasn't tarnished at all since my saltwater trip. The problem comes when I'm casting. At times the line will find it way into the arm and snap the cast short. My motto for the trip had become "son of a bail-less b****" whenever it snapped the cast short.

I just purchased a 4500. I am a surf guy and the light weight and water tight seals drove my decision. I noticed upon taking the reel out of the box the unusually close tolerance between the bail and spool in cast mode. When casting I've got to believe that the line will be rubbing on the bail thus impeding to some degree casting distance. Am I all wet on this ?

This is standard on these reels. You are absolutely correct on the bale being close to the spool at times. With the way the reel is designed this is actually not a concern and will not affect your casting distance. The Spinfisher will treat you very well getting out into the surf where you want to be.

I have a lot of rod and reels and there are some that I only use for a short period of time each year.
I would like to use the same reel and/or Rod for two types of fishing if possible. In May and June, I fish Offshore for Dolphin, I need a few spinning combos for throwing plugs at weed patches and chunking cut bait after I get the fish under the boat. In the Fall I fish for Tarpon with dead and live bait. I was thinking that the Spinfisher 6500 may be able to handle both of these types of fishing. What do you think? Do you have a Rod selection that would work for both of these ?

The Spinfisher series spools have a rubber inlay where the first level of line lays. I assume this is to stop braid from slipping on the spool. Others have recommended using an initial layer or so of monofilament to prevent braid from slipping on the spool. Is the rubber inlay sufficient? What do you recommend?

The rubber on these reels is sufficient. You do not need to also use mono backing or tape.. The braid won't slip with this sort of spool.

Hello Jeffrey, I would recommend you go with the 6500 size Penn Spinfisher V.
This size will hold 300 yards of 30 lbs line which is more than enough for fighting big blues and striped bass. It will also have plenty of drag for fighting bigger fish as well. It will be a great match with your Mojo and you will be able to throw lures and or bait all day with this setup.

Do the 6500 and the 5500 have the same body size? Are the differences only the spool sizes? Looking to get the bailless but they only have the 6500 size. I like the 5500 size as it balances well with my rod.

The difference is in the oscillation rate of the bail. It is much slower than than 7500 thus the line lay is much more even. This allows for the line to come off the spool more smoothly and increases the casting distance considerably.

As for the length, you would want to use at least a 10' rod, maybe up to 12' long. The model really depends on you and how you fish. If you are throwing large plugs or bait, you need a more stout rod than if you are only throwing light weight offerings. What you are fishing for also comes into play.
The Penn prevail and the new Battalion rods are both great choices.

For surf fishing dead baits, I would recommend the Spinfisher 7500SSV. This reel is better designed for throwing heavy baits and it a little more HD to handle the surf more than the Battle. If you are looking to throw mostly artificial baits the battle would be better because it is much lighter than the SSV reels.
