A Trustworthy Workhorse
August 31, 2022
I bought the 2500 size to put on my freshwater finesse rig. I spooled it with 20 lb braid to an 8 lb fluorocarbon leader and it has been great for drop shots, wacky rigs, and small jerkbaits. It has a strong drag and is made out of high-quality components. I plan to get a 5500 for my inshore set up.

This is a GRAND SLAM reel at this price point. The 4500 is a great multi-purpose size, enough to hoist double-digit fluke from the Shrews and handle hefty stripers off of Block Island. You can take it and jig bait fish with sabiki and immediately swap rigs for blues, trout, stripers, flounder. Typical bullet-proof Penn quality, Tackle Direct has outstanding retail level support as far as shipping, questions, etc...so don't hesitate to buy here!

I am loving this reel for the back bays, I have caught fluke, bluefish, weakfish, sea robins, and even a giant snub nosed ray on this reel. The drag is great and it casts great when throwing metal at those toothy blue fish when you see the birds working the bait. Over all a great addition to the arsenal.

I used this to pull in a few stripers this May on a 9' medium action rod. All were over 44". The fish were really hard on the reel. Ripped tons of line off through 15-20 minute fights on the surf. In the end we got everyone of them on the beach!

I'm really enjoying this reel on my 9' St. Croix Mojo Surf and it's been great over the past 3 seasons. I've landed some nice slot sized Stripers here in the North East and it has handled larger fish well. This is my first bailless reel and it's working well for me. Can't beat the price point when comparing to other bailless reel brands!

Great Reel for Surf-Casting Lures
May 10, 2022
I bought this reel on the recommendation of an experienced surf-caster who uses it to throw lures for stripers and blues. I load it with 30-lb. PowerPro and have taken it out on a few trips. It's paired with a 9' Tica Dolphin Surf, I also purchased here. Though I've not caught fish yet, the reel is very high quality for a good price and is well suited to the task.
Pros
  • Light, sealed system, good quality (the protestations of those who rag on Penn notwithstanding).
Cons
  • No spare spools for the IV series! Only the V. If you want to have spare spools, get the V.

Spinfisher VS Slammer HS looking at 6500 series SURF fishing Thoughts

The slammer HS can withstand the abuse from surf fishing. Both the gearbox and the drag are sealed in the reel, while it can handle splash and spray the reel is not fully sealed.

Can you please tell me what surf rod would match up well with your a Spinfisher VI 6500 Live Liner reel? I’d prefer to stay under $300 and the setup would be for casting no more than 3oz weight plus a live pinfish or shrimp for pompano and drum. I’d like a 10’6†to 13’ light rod.

Whats better paired with a St. Croix Tidemaster 8 MH rod? The Penn Spinfisher VI 4500 or 5500 series?
1 Answer
Hello Chris,

As far as balancing the spinfisher with the St.Croix Tidemaster the 4500 is the way to go. You do sacrifice some line capacity as well as drag going with the smaller reel but you'll get a better overall pairing with the 4500 Penn Spinfisher.

Frank T.
from Lords Valley, PA asked:
April 21, 2022
Are these reels (Penn Spinfisher VI 4500 & 6500) water proof if dunked?

Also what is your recommended procedure for cleaning these reels after each use and the at end of season?

1 Answer
Hi Frank, The Penn Spinfisher VI series is considered Water Resistant due to these being Semi Sealed and not Fully Sealed. These are made to handle occasional splashing but not dunking. If fishing heavily you would simply gently rinse your reel off after the end of every trip. Then about 1-2 times a month lubricate the exposed areas like the line roller, and spool shaft under the spool. At the end of the season you will want to send your reels to a Authorized Penn Reel Service center for a full service cleaning and to replace any worn parts after the season. This maintenance will help keep you reels in tip top shape and keep you from any issues on the water. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Penn Conflict 2 or Penn Spinfisher VI? And why?
1 Answer
Hi Craig, While the Penn Conflict II offer a light body and smooth design, I would recommend a Penn Spinfisher VI series reel. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-spinfisher-vi-spinning-reels.html Theres many different sizes and three different kinds that cater to many different fishing applications. You have a basic SSVI series from 2500-10500 that can be used for many different applications. There is also the LongCast "LC" series designed for long casting for surf fishing applications and the LiveLiner or "LL" series which is great for fishing with cut and live bait applications. The Spinfisher VI series also have a IPX 5 sealing system designed to block out salt water and other elements that allows the reel to be splashed and not damage the internals of the reel. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Model: MJJS66MHMF; TackleDirect Code: SCR-1646. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-batspjii450s68mh-battalion-ii-slow-pitch-spinning-rod.html .https://www.tackledirect.com/st-croix-mjjs66mhmf-mojo-jig-spinning-rod.html. Both rods would be great options for your Penn Spinfisher VI 5500. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Will the egg handle that comes on the 5500 fit the 4500 as well? The paddle handle is tough when trying to apply max power on bigger fish..If so, what is the part number to order to replace
1 Answer
According to Penn, The handle for the PENN Spinfisher VI 5500 (SSVI5500) will NOT fit the SSVI4500 size reel. Penn does have an alternative handle that will fit reel (SSVI4500). The Slammer III 3500 (SLAIII3500) Spinning reel handle, part number 1418975 will fit your reel. This handle is currently on backorder/ out of stock with Penn. If you would like to place an order for this part once it becomes available, please feel free to contact PENN Customer Service at 1-800-892-5444. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Recommended rod for 4500spinfisher vi
1 Answer
Frank,

A good rod to go with the Penn Spinfisher VI 4500 spinning reel would be the St.Croix Mojo Inshore spinning rod JIS70MHM.  This would be a good all around combo for inshore and back bay types of fishing.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

1 Answer
Frank,

The Penn Battalion II series of spinning rods will pair nicely with the Penn Spinfisher VI series of spinning reels.  For example: Penn SSVI4500 spinning reel and the Penn BATINII1017S70 will be a good medium action combo.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

What is the size difference between the 2500 and the 3500? I the spool just larger on the 3500.  I'm looking for a new reel for my Tsunami 7' Airwave for fluke and kingfish from the beach.
1 Answer
Steve,

The 3500 & 4500 Spinfisher are the same reel with the 4500 having the slightly larger spool.  The 2500 is a smaller body reel and weighs about 1.5oz lighter.  For your 7ft rod, I would recommend the 4500 has you will have more line capacity from the beach.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Is the 2500 smaller (body size) than the 3500 or just a smaller spool? I ask because my Spinfisher V 3500 is smaller than my Persuit lll 3000. Ithe SSV3500 is a really small reel.. I fish Specs and Reds out of a kayak on the Louisiana coast. I need another 3500 size reel and was curious about the 2500
1 Answer
Hello Stevie, The 2500 is going to be smaller then the 3500, Unfortunately I do not have any 2500 in stock to get you a picture of the difference.

I would use a 5500 from the boat and from the sure depending on the size of rod i would look between the 5500-7500. If you are fishing bait from shore I would recommend using one with a Live Liner feature.
