Best reel I own
June 16, 2022
The slammer 4 2500 is a beast. I primarily kayak fish the salt and these reals are perfect. They are smooth and refined but held up to a beating. I have a pair of the newest spinfishers that also have held up. I have gone through diawa bgs, Stradics, and a few other reels that we’re smooth as butter but could not hold up to the beating they take on a kayak.
Pros
  • Strong
  • Smooth
  • Great for kayak fishing
Cons
  • None so far

AWESOME REEL
April 8, 2022
I've owned a lot of spinning reels in my time, (nearly every brand) and some were great reels. This Penn Slammer lV is quality that can get into the ring with any heavy weight fighter. These are military tough and smooth too. The drag is consistently smooth on long runs and the bail is solid. I will never switch again from Penn again. Price represents quality and I expect to get YEARS and YEARS of enjoyment knowing that I have the advantage once hooked up. The only thing that this reel needs is line and an angler saying "Fish on".
Pros
  • Too many to list... Love the high speed gears.
Cons
  • Availability was slow at first. Don't own enough of them.

Powerful Precision
March 31, 2022
This reel has exceeded my every expectation. Diawa has been my reel of choice for nearly two decades. The power and sturdiness of these reels is remarkable. So much so I know own a 5500, 7500,8500HS. This reel handled some sizeable Cubera Snapper and a 30 kilo Rooster just weeks ago. Never have I considered until now, a reel I enjoy as much as my Line-up up Saltigas. Far as price goes. Almost 3 of the SlammerIV series for the price of one Saltiga. Still love my Dogfight 8000HDF though.
Pros
  • Powerful, smooth retrieve, dunk able, built like a tank, affordable spare spools, PRICE

Love my reel
March 29, 2022
Bought the 10500 size for sharks off the jetty. That and looks, I put pandora braid on the reel. Its looks so cool, 100lb purple braid with the reel. I may do a photo shoot with this, it's like holding a super model in your hands. Just amazing
Pros
  • It makes me happy
Cons
  • I want more and more. Maybe I'm a reel addict

I am considering the Penn Slammer IV 8500 for both butterfly jigging and occasional top water popping for ~100 lb YFT and BFT. Occasionally we get larger fish up to ~ 300 lb.  Any suggestions

for a good rod to mate with this reel?

Thanks

1 Answer
Hi JC, We recommend going with the Ocean Tackle International Tuna Sniper popping rod in the 7'6 rated 80-120 for popping ( https://www.tackledirect.com/ocean-tackle-international-ts2-popping-rods.html ) and the Black Hole Cape Cod Special Jigging rod in 5'2 rated to 450g for jigging ( https://www.tackledirect.com/black-hole-cape-cod-special-jigging-rods-spinning.html ). Hello guys what rod power do you guys recommend to pair the slammer5500 with 50lb braid between medium heavy or heavy power for inshore  fishing for really big snook and throwing lures

but has a good back bone keep a big fish out of structure. I really like the Shimano Teramar 8 foot between these two models which one you guys think will pair best for this reel TMS-80MH orTMS-80H thanks
1 Answer
Hi Emilio, Between the two rods we recommend going with the 8ft heavy Shimano Teramar spinning which allows you to throw bigger plugs and have a bit more backbone for your application. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with!

I plan on going with the Penn Slammer 4 7500 or 8500 for big fish off the jetti, the occasional surf fishing, and the boat. I would be using 50 pound braid. What model and size Penn Carnage 3 rod would you recommend? I was thinking either the spinning boat rod or the inshore spinning rod. Lastly, when will yall have more Carnage 3 boat and inshore rods in stock? Thank you.
1 Answer
Hi Paul, I would recommend a Penn SLAIV7500 Slammer IV Spinning Reel. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-slaiv7500-slammer-iv-spinning-reel.html This would pair well with a Penn CARJGIII3080S66 Carnage III Jig Spinning Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-carjgiii3080s66-carnage-iii-jig-spinning-rod.html This would be ideal for targeting large fish for both the boat and jetties. Unfortunately we do not have any delivery dates at this time as to when we will receive more Penn Carnage III rods in-stock. I would recommend to periodically check the website to see when it will be back in-stock and available to order as our inventory updates in 24/7 real time. what is the meaning of BLS on slamer 5500?

does slamer III 5500 spools  works on slamer IV 5500?

2 Answers
Laurent,

The Penn Slammer 5500BLS is a bail-less reel (BLS).  Meaning there is no bail to flip over to cast.  You manually have to put the line back on the line roller.  Also, the spools on the Slammer III and Slammer IV are not interchangeable.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Submitted by: Rick - TackleDirect Customer Service on September 29, 2021
Laurent, BLS stands for bailess, so those models will have a manual pickup instead of a bail.  Link below that will go directly to the bailess version with images for clarification if needed. Spools would not be interchangeable between Slammer III and Slammer IV unfortunately. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

Brandon,

The Penn Slammer 2500-5500 sizes have the automatic bail trip, the 6500 and up have the manual bail trip.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Is the new Penn Slammer IV 100% sealed as compared to a Van Staal or Salt X?
1 Answer
Jason,

The Penn Slammer IV has a sealed body and spool with the IPX6 design.  It also has a redesigned drag system to be better sealed, but does not commit to being fully sealed if you submerge reel in water.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

What is the difference between the Penn Slammer iv 4500 and the slammer iv 4500 hs
1 Answer
Richard,

The difference between the Penn Slammer IV 4500 and 4500HS is the gear ratio and retrieve rate.  The 4500 (6.2:1 / 40in) and the 4500HS (7.0:1 / 48in).  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Seems like the weight and capacity is exactly the same as the slammer 3, is that accurate?
1 Answer
Orren,

The Penn Slammer III and IV do have the same weight and capacity.  The big difference is the IV has the IPX6 sealed body and spool to be better sealed and an redesigned drag system.  Please let us know if there is anything else that we can assist you with.
