The Penn Pursuit III is designed to deliver big fish fighting capabilities at an entry level price point. Most lower priced spinning reels use oiled felt drag washers which simply cannot stand up to the abuse taken from large saltwater fish. Penn has solved this problem by implementing their HT-100 drag material into their opening price point spinning reel. This means that the Pursuit III features the same durable carbon drag found on significantly more expensive reels. This key addition, along with a corrosion resistant graphite body and 5 shielded stainless steel ball bearings, make the Pursuit III the strongest reel in its class.

Penn Pursuit III Features:

  • HT-100 carbon fiber drag system
  • Lightweight and corrosion resistant graphite body
  • 4+1 shielded stainless steel ball bearings
  • Superline Spool
  • CNC folding aluminum handle
  • Infinite Anti-Reverse

For the price this reel is great. Could not really ask for much more in a reel at this price point. I have had mine for a few years now and its still just as smooth as the day I got it.

cant beat it for a kids first salt reel
February 21, 2022
light weight and the big knob makes it really good for a kids first salt water reel or something cheap as a back up or to let someone borrow. with the ht100 drag you can fight anything and more that similarly priced rod will.

Great for the price

I bought this reel (4000) for my wife to fish for bait and do some small bottom fishing off of our kayak. It does the job really well. She's even reeled up decent sized yellow spot papios that were great sashimi!

She doesn't go a whole lot with me, and if she was fishing more consistently I'd probably look into upgrading her gear, but it works perfectly for her as it stands.
Pros
  • Great value, does it's job.

Well balanced reel light - medium action gives you a great feel, this is my second Penn Pursuit I have a 5000 series to plus two older 5000 Penn Fierce series that are still going strong, very pleased with both the line-up.

For not being top of the line these reels are pretty well built. Caught many different species on these reels and have only had problems with really big fish smoking the drag. Not that I think it is a problem with the reel.
Pros
  • Light
  • Durable
  • Inexpensive
Cons
  • Drag is a little funny
  • Not the smoothest winding

I own the 2500, 4000 & 6000 models.
They perform excellent, smooth drag & pretty sturdy. The construction is fairly simply so you could repair them on your own when needed. That makes them last even longer for me!
Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Cost effective
  • Easy to repair
  • Good ergonomics
  • Looks good on my rod
Cons
  • Graphite material

Would a 4000 size be well paired with a 10 medium heavy surf rod?
1 Answer
Thomas, the Penn Pursuit 5000 would balance out better with a 10' MH Surf Rod. The 4000 would pair up best with an 8-9' Surf Rod. Please let us know if we can assist with anything else.

My son moved to NYC. Fishing from shore in NY bay and lower NY bay. With Tica 9’ rod would you recommend Penn Pursuit 4000 or 5000? Thanks

1 Answer
Cant go wrong with either, typically for surf fishing i would go with the 5000 for the extra line capacity

Specs show mono line capacity are these reels suitable for braid. If so what would the maximum length of braid for the 5000 model?
1 Answer
What lb test braid are you interested in capacity for? We would need to know what lb test so we can make an approximation for mono to braid equivalence. Please give us a call at 1-(888)-354-7335 we will be happy to assist you.
