The Penn Pursuit III is designed to deliver big fish fighting capabilities at an entry level price point. Most lower priced spinning reels use oiled felt drag washers which simply cannot stand up to the abuse taken from large saltwater fish. Penn has solved this problem by implementing their HT-100 drag material into their opening price point spinning reel. This means that the Pursuit III features the same durable carbon drag found on significantly more expensive reels. This key addition, along with a corrosion resistant graphite body and 5 shielded stainless steel ball bearings, make the Pursuit III the strongest reel in its class.

light weight and the big knob makes it really good for a kids first salt water reel or something cheap as a back up or to let someone borrow. with the ht100 drag you can fight anything and more that similarly priced rod will.

I bought this reel (4000) for my wife to fish for bait and do some small bottom fishing off of our kayak. It does the job really well. She's even reeled up decent sized yellow spot papios that were great sashimi!
She doesn't go a whole lot with me, and if she was fishing more consistently I'd probably look into upgrading her gear, but it works perfectly for her as it stands.

Well balanced reel light - medium action gives you a great feel, this is my second Penn Pursuit I have a 5000 series to plus two older 5000 Penn Fierce series that are still going strong, very pleased with both the line-up.

For not being top of the line these reels are pretty well built. Caught many different species on these reels and have only had problems with really big fish smoking the drag. Not that I think it is a problem with the reel.

I own the 2500, 4000 & 6000 models.
They perform excellent, smooth drag & pretty sturdy. The construction is fairly simply so you could repair them on your own when needed. That makes them last even longer for me!

The "c" means that it is sold in a clam pack a plastic case instead of a box.

Item numbers to indicate a sealed reel?

Hi Ron, The Penn Pursuit III PURIII4000 Spinning Reel is not considered a sealed reel. The Penn Spinfisher VI, The Penn Slammer IV, and Penn Torque II are considered "semi" sealed reels from Penn. None are fully sealed like the Van Staal reels. This is due to the IPX rating on all three models. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines
