Can this be used for fresh water? Is it good for 17 year old who only fished a couple times?

Donna,

The Penn Fierce III combo FRCIII5000701MH can be used in freshwater.  Depending on what your fishing for, it might be a bit heavy.  The FRCIII4000701M would be a better choice if targeting bass, bluegills or fish of similar size.   Any of the Penn Fierce combos can be used in salt or fresh water and are good for any skill level fisherperson.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
