was thinking of buying the 15 penn fathom 2 speed reel would this reel be good offshore seabass in new jersey in december
1 Answer
The Penn Fathom 15 is the perfect size for offshore seabass or any deep water bottom fishing. It holds plenty of braided line and also is small enough to fit comfortably in the hand also with 16lbs of drag at max it will cover all species you will run into while seabassing.

Could you please explain the difference between LD and NLD on these reels? I don't understand what the "N" stands for, and thus, the reason for this distinction... e.g., FTH25-NLD-2 vs. FTH30-LD-2

The "n" would stand for narrow spool

I fish out of San Diego for yellowtail, yellow fin tuna, blue fin tuna and the occasional dorado. Mostly using live bait. Im having a hard time deciding between this and the tranx 401 because of freshwater background and

i fish left handed and my options are slim for my price range.  What rod would be a good match for under $200.

1 Answer
You'll want the fathom for the type of fishing you're doing. As far as a rod the pgb70xh for Star rods would be a good choice.

West coast fishermen, San Diego. Offshore to the Coronado islands and a few other offshore/inshore spots. I have the 30 2 speed model with 65 pound braid 30 pound flour. What would be the best rod to match up with this reel. I do a lot of yellowtail fishing, rock fishing, small grade tuna 20-80 pound. Usually like a 9ft rod. Any suggestions?
1 Answer
We have a RH Composites SS Surf Series Conventional Rods in a heavy 9 foot 1 piece but we are unable to ship that due to shipping restrictions, there is a 9 foot 2 piece medium but may be to light for the type of fishing you want to use.

Will the 15xnld2 and the 25NLD2 be good for casting surface iron for yellowtail in Southern California?
1 Answer
Hi Ryan, The Penn Fathom Lever Drag 2 speed reels will not work well for your application as these reels do not come with a magnetic cast function to assist you with casting. We recommend looking at Penn Squall II Star drag reel in size 15 as another option ( https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-squall-ii-star-drag-reels.html ). Hello, what would be the correct power pro line weight for a Penn Fathom 30LD two speed reel? Interested in the original spectra fiber line or the slick V2 line. Also what is most effective line color? Reel would be used for bottom fishing in the gulf for Snapper, Grouper, etc. Thanks in advance!
1 Answer
Hi Adam. For bottom fishing with that reel, we suggest 40 or 50# braid and a 20 -30 foot fluorocarbon leader of 60-80#. As for line color it really is personal choice. Some guys like the yellow due to visibility while others like the blue to blend in with water color.

Hi Thomas, The Penn Fathom Lever Drag Reel in the 25N size will work for your application and planned line selection but we recommend the 30 size to get more braid capacity and allow for more 50# topshot. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with!

Will a 100lb mono/flouro top shot put too much pressure on 80lb braided main line? Also would a 6-8 turn RP knot be a good connection knot for that pound test?

Thank you

1 Answer
Hi Sean, For most offshore applcations 100lb topshot of either monofilament or fluorocarbon will be fine attached to 80lb Braided line. You can do this a number of ways. For Trolling applications I would recommend a bimini twist for the braided line attached to the leader by via Yukatan knot and for chunking and jigging applications I would recommend a FG Knot for the strongest connection possible. A PR knot would work as well. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

April 1, 2022
Hi, can you please explain the sunset drag for this reel? If its 28lbs at full how do you get to sunset drag. Does the lever actually move past the full setting on reel?

Thanks

1 Answer
Hi Sean, According to Penn, The Sunset position just means the maximum drag setting for the reel. The lever at Sunset point shows maximum drag has been reached when set for full pressure. This would primarily be for a "do or die" situation, such as a shark/sea lion is about to get your fish, or the fish is about to run under a rock and you may lose it, or you may be about to get spooled and you need a little bit of extra drag to slow down the fish to gain control of the fight. I bought the 30 left hand. I was thinking of pairing it with a Okuma PCH 706XH...would that be a good pairIng? What is the max weight yellowfin and bluefin tuna I could catch? I usually fish out San Diego CA

Hi Ray, Unfortunately we only carry the Penn Fathom Lever Drag 2-Speed Reel in Right Hand Retrieve for the Fathom 40 and Fathom 60 models. The Penn FTH30LD2LH Lever Drag 2-Speed Reel would pair well with your Okuma PCH 706 XH rod for fishing tuna. That would be ideal for smaller school size bluefin and yellowfing tuna species. Isnt max drag 40lbs on these reels? Why is the drag from strike to full 23 to 28lbs?

Hi Sean, The Penn FTH40NLD2 Lever Drag 2-Speed Reel has a manufacturer listed drag rating listed for 23lbs at Strike, 28lbs at Full Drag, and 40lbs at Sunset Drag which is the highest the lever can go. What is the drag curve on a 40NLD once you pass strike? I noticed on the Okuma metlaoid once you pass strike, the drag nearly button downs immediately.  Does the 40 2 speed have a larger drag curve? Also I'm thinking of pairing the Penn Fathom 40 2 speed with and Okuma CJ601Ha rod rated for 65-150Lb line. I want to be able to reel in 100+lb tuna. Would this be a good set up for jigging flat falls or torpedo rigs for west coast bluefin?

Thanks

1 Answer
Hi Sean, According to Penn, Both Penn models: FTH40NLD and the FTH40NLD2 have the same drag. When the drag is increased from Strike to Full Drag there is a 5lb increase from 23lb to 28lbs. If you put the lever in between Strike and Full that would be approximately a 2.5lb increase in drag. The best way to determine exactly what lb your drag is at would be to 1) Pre-set your drag at stike using a drag scale and 2) Using a drag scale, mark lb drag increments on the side of the reel to indicate the exact level drag in between Strike and Full. 1 Answer
Hi Aymeric, For the Penn Fathom Lever Drag 2-Speed Reels, the "XN" refers to the spool size for the model of the reel. "XN" means "Extra Narrow" spool. This is ideal for many different jigging applications where you need a narrow spool to help guide the line evenly onto the reel as you reeling up your line.
