Penn Battle II Spinning Reels are no exception. Built like tanks but surprisingly affordable, the lineup of Penn Battle 2 reels includes versions that can handle everything from perch and snapper to cow bass and alligator blues.
Even though it's tough, this reel is a smooth operator. The Battle II has Penn's HT-100 Versa-Drag washers keyed into the spool, which allows both sides of each drag washer to be used. This gives the Battle II higher max drags.

I own many sizes of this reel and it it awesome. I use the 1000 for small trout and larger 2000 for bass. Ideal for a reliable freshwater and saltwater reel. Very smooth.

I am a big fan of PENN but I despise this reel in particular.
This reel ceases up very easy, I always rinsed and used PENN Rod&Reel cleaner after saltwater use and it still ceased up and started to grind (was never dunked or dropped on sand). This reel is also not smooth at all, and is heavy, if you are looking for a work horse reel this isn't it. If you use it here and there then it will last.
Better off getting a Battle 3, BG, or spend a little extra and get a Clash or Spinfisher.

Last summer one of our party hooked something 'big' on the bottom of a freshwater lake that felt like a log until it started towing the 17 1/2 foot boat with three people. For 30 minutes the slow ballet of push and pull went on until the body of a large snapping turtle came to the surface. The hook was stuck in the shell and with some thrashing around it was clipped off, and the turtle disappeared. Throughout, the Battle II performed like a fine surgical tool.... smooth, easy to control, without grinding, and ready to do it all over again the moment the action stopped. All of my reels are PENNs... and people ask "Why do you spend so much money on one brand." All I can say is, "Come hook a big snapper and see for yourself?" Besides they don't rust, and they always look good.... even the 20 year olds I'm still using.

a very strong and nice reel for price. a little heavier then most of my reels same size but it is a balanced reel. very smooth and strong. i would recommend this for any striper or hybrid fishing.

For the money this reel rocks. I was trying to run a Fierce ii for a long time, but those kept breaking. Finally stepped "up" to this reel and I'm so glad I did. Primarily used for catching bait from my kayak, but I and others have used it for jigging off kayaks here in Hawaii. Won't break the bank, and so far I'm not sure if it will break at all.

I bought the Battle II 6000, and have been using it almost once a week for porgy, sea bass, fluke and now stripers, almost everything the sea has to offer here in North Jersey. I even tried it for cod in 150 feet water off Rhode Island. The reel is smooth and tough, with zero problem. I bought a Battle III, and will try to see if there is any difference.

If you are looking into the Penn Battle III for this i would recommend the 8000 size reel, I know its a little more money but the Penn Spinfisher 8500 would be more suitable for this fishing application

Hi, I'm looking at buying a Penn Fierce 3000 for my son and a Penn Battle II 4000 for myself - saltwater fishing from land and boat (not going for the big stuff) - local fishers recommend 15lb test mono - can I load these reels up with that line - it seems to exceed the recommended lines but I don't really want to go too big reel wise for my son (who is 9) - probably going to pair these reels up with Ugly Stik GX2 Medium 2 piece 6ft and 7ft rods so need reels which aren't too big/heavy. Any help would be appreciated, many thanks.

If you wanted to use that pound test, I would switch to a bigger reel or use braided line instead. With 15lb monofilament you would not fit enough line on the reel. Another option would be to use a lighter mono.

This reel is made in China, not USA. The only Penn spinning reels still made in the USA are the Z-Series and the Torque series.

How do you load line on a spinning reel?

You would tie your line onto the reel using an "arbor knot" if using mono line, if you are using braided line then you would tie it onto the reel using a "uni-knot" and then put a small piece of tape on top of the knot/line (electrical works best) in order to prevent your braided line to spin or move on the reel. Then, you would make sure the line lays under the bail correctly, shut the bail, and with your drag turned tight start reeling the line onto your reel. When reeling on the line, I like to have another person hold the spool of line I am using (with a screwdriver going through the hole/middle of the spool so that the spool can spin smoothly) so I can get the tightest handle on it, allowing my line to go on as tight as possible.

The 6000/7000 size would probably be your best bet on an 11 foot rod. I have a 9 foot Penn Prevail surf rod with a Battle II 5000 and it balances perfectly.

The Battle II reels are not waterproof. The Spin fisher is sealed, but not completely waterproof. It will work well for you with your application.
If you want a waterproof reel, you are looking at a Van Staal or ZeeBaas.

The Penn Battle II 4000 (PEN-1333) is a very good all around reel at a great price. Also consider the Quantum Cabo 40 (QUA-0297). It is lighter then the Penn and has a titanium magnetic bail system which is virtually indestructible.

Hi..let me ask, where would you go fishing?Is it in in the sea? Or river maybe? A 10' rod may be a bit too long if you would ask me. For Battle 2, I would recommend something around 7-8'. Just one thing you have to consider is Power (Light, Medium or Heavy) and the Action (e.g. Fast). If you are looking to catch multiple types of fish, you may want to go for a Medium/Fast rating rod. It works perfectly for all of us here in Salalah, Oman.
