Lighter, smaller reel for constant casting
June 27, 2022
Smaller reel I use for casting lures over and over again. Paired with a 10' 6" rod, the combo works great on stripers and bluefish. Drag works OK. I would not use for chunking bait or for anything bigger.
Pros
  • Light-weight, easy to use & control.
Cons
  • Smallish.

Great job Penn
June 3, 2022
Love the battles from Penn. Bought 2 battle 2 in 2016 and they are still amazing. Letting my son use them now that he’s old enough. Decided to upgrade to a battle 3. Took out for the first time a week ago and it did not disappoint. Caught me some strippers! Keep up the good work Penn!

Great inshore reels
May 19, 2022
I have two of these reels, a 3000 and 4000. This reel is an excellent inshore reel. It can handle flounder in the back and out front, weakfish, striper and tog (if using a tog jig on a spinning rod). Nice and robust and not as heavy as some other Penn reels. The 3000 is paired with a 7foot st.croix triumph medium power fast action, and the 4000 is on a older 7foot medium heavy star stellar lite nickelite rod. Two things that are not great is that the smaller models do not come with a power handle like the dx version does. That being said, it is a pain to put an after market knob on it i.e. Gomexus. The paddle handles are riveted, so in order to change to a knob you have to drill out the paddle and bore out the handle to accept the new knob. Second thing is in cold weather the anti-reverse clutch has a tendency to slip, the absolute worst thing you want to have happen when setting the hook on a white chin while jigging in December.
Pros
  • Nice robust reel with plenty of power.
Cons
  • No power knob, and to replace the paddle with one is a choir.
  • Anti-reverse clutch slips in cold weather.

Better than the Battle II
February 27, 2022
Bought this reel for jigging Cod and other game fish. Much better build than the II in my opinion.
Pros
  • Strong and smooth operation. Holds enough braid and has enough drag to fight some serious game fish.

If I order this reel (2500 for Speckled trout), can I also order the braid and have it spooled up before it ships to me?
1 Answer
Hi Steve, Yes you can order the reel and have it spooled before it is shipped to you. Just add any spool of line you would like to go on to the order to your order and put in the notes that you would like it spooled. You can also call our customer service department to set up your order to request to have it spooled or for recommendations for line to spool it with at 1-888-354-7335.

What affordable rod would go with a 2000 or lower for corbina surf fishing
1 Answer
Hi Finn, Based on your fishing application I would recommend a Tsunami TSTIISS-702M Trophy II Surf Spinning Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/tsunami-tstiiss-702m-trophy-ii-surf-spinning-rod.html This rod is very light and would be ideal for your fishing application. Whats a good reel size for tarpon from the beach? I was thinking 5000 but is that too small?
1 Answer
Hi Jackson, I would recommend Penn Battle III 6000 size. Specifically model: BTLIII6000HS; TD Code: PEN-1861. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-btliii6000hs-battle-iii-spinning-reel.html. This reel has a fast retrieve and can hold alot of line which is needed to fight large tarpon. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

will the reel handle on penn battle II fit on the new battle III?

Vic,

Unfortunately Penn does not state that the handles are interchangeable between the Battle II and III spinning reels and TackleDirect does not have any Battle II in stock so we are unable to check.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with..

What size real is good for tarpon in the 50 pound range and what rod
1 Answer
Charles,

The Penn Battle III 4000 will do the job on those mid sized Tarpon spooled with 30lb braid.  The rod that would pair nicely is the Shimano Teramar Inshore SE spinning rod TMS-70MH.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Thinking to use a 5000 from boat for rockfish and lingcod, thinking to pair with a ugly stik tiger elite jigging rod. What jigging rods would you reccommend to pair with a battle 3 5000? How sealed is the battle 3 5000?

Thanks

1 Answer
I would actually recommend you go up to the Penn Battle III 8000 this will closely match most jigging rods line ratings and provide sufficient line capacity to hit bottom and properly fish for lingcod and rockfish. The Ugly Stik Tiger Elite Jig Spinning Rods matches the 8000 good and so does Star EXJS56H Aerial Jigging Spinning Rod

Im getting one of these reels for large sharks and im am stressing on whether to get the 8000 or the 10000 i would buy the 10000 but its twice as heavy. Any suggestions? I'm a shorter person 5 foot 8.
1 Answer
It really depends on what rod you're using, however for large sharks I would definitely go with the 10000,

purely because of its line capacity advantage. Its only 11oz more than the 27 oz 8000.

Hey i was wondering what size reel for surf cast sharkfishing for sharks 6 feet and up? And what rod to go with it? i have a couple spinfisher 6000s i use for bull reds but i wanted to step up my game and catch some sharks.

Thanks, Nick

1 Answer
For larger sharks I would go with either of the 8000 models. The 8000HS is the high speed version that offers a bit more line capacity as well. You could even go up to the 10000 size, but keep in mind, it is a very large reel.

Which size would be best for all around inshore fishing? I have a 2500 battle 2 but was looking for something maybe a little bigger to hang with the bull reds
1 Answer
I would go with the 4000 size. This should allow you to handle larger fish when they come along, as well as still maintaining the finesse needed for light tackle scenarios.
