I tested my 20 lb dacron backing when I started tying on 20 lb mono leaders for stripers on sinking lines and it breaks consistently at 10-11 lbs, which is fine for when you have 4x-6x tippet on. I tested the 30 and it broke at 18 lbs and a 16 lb leader would win in a head to head fight on 5 tests I did. I would not use more than a 12 lb leader with 30 lb dacron....... Note that when you are using sinking lines on a boat, you are in the backing alot.
I started looking at 65 lb braid, which I use on my offshore spinning reels as an alternative and found a bunch of online discussion with a lot of saltwater guys going to the hollow core line.
I do not splice, but tie a simple 6 turn (triple) surgeons knot or albright depending on if the line has a loop. It will not break before my leader by a long shot and that gives me 100% confidence.
Why do I use hollow if I don't splice? Simple. It wont cut off my hand if I get wrapped and with a fly line you sometimes need to grab the line. Many discussions miss this added benefit and focus solely on wanting to splice or not, but my last trip out, I had band-aids on my hands for a few days after my trip and don't want to do that again.
I am now going to buy an 80 lb spool for my larger reels (10 wt and up) and spool my 8-9 weight reels with 60.
Note that the 60 lbs Momoi is listed as the same diamter as the 80 lb Seaguar Threadlock if you are trying for a comparison. I would recommend the 80 for the largest reels.
I will also not hesitate to buy the colored version and just soak it in warm water overnight to get rid of any excess dye before loading on the reel.
- Will not cut you.
- Ultimate strength. Splices but also ties in standard knots well. Bimini loops or surgeons loops can be formed very simply.
- None
- Strong!
- Really thick
- Price.
