Tough braid
February 5, 2022
I’ve used many different brands of hollow core braid and while gen 3 isn’t the best it holds up to a lot of abuse. I’ve had a few major backlashes and I was able to untangle the braid with no damage to it. I even had a huge fish swim under the pier and wrap around barnacle covered posts. I thought I was going to lose him for sure but I was able to pull him out. It feels a little thicker than other braids of the same class and it’s not the easiest to splice but gets easier the more you work with it.

Best hollow core for the money
August 19, 2021
Best deal going, the 3rd gen hollow core from Diamond splices well, doesn't dig in, consistent, fishes well. 100 lb and the 130 lb works great as backing for 30's, 50s, 80's.
Pros
  • affordable, available, works great
Cons
  • little stiffer than JB, but it doesn't seem in impact performance at all in any way. great stuff.

60 Lb Hollow Core as Fly Line Backing
December 6, 2020
20 and 30 lb dacron was made for trout reels, not fighting an angry tarpon on an 11 weight.

I tested my 20 lb dacron backing when I started tying on 20 lb mono leaders for stripers on sinking lines and it breaks consistently at 10-11 lbs, which is fine for when you have 4x-6x tippet on. I tested the 30 and it broke at 18 lbs and a 16 lb leader would win in a head to head fight on 5 tests I did. I would not use more than a 12 lb leader with 30 lb dacron....... Note that when you are using sinking lines on a boat, you are in the backing alot.

I started looking at 65 lb braid, which I use on my offshore spinning reels as an alternative and found a bunch of online discussion with a lot of saltwater guys going to the hollow core line.

I do not splice, but tie a simple 6 turn (triple) surgeons knot or albright depending on if the line has a loop. It will not break before my leader by a long shot and that gives me 100% confidence.

Why do I use hollow if I don't splice? Simple. It wont cut off my hand if I get wrapped and with a fly line you sometimes need to grab the line. Many discussions miss this added benefit and focus solely on wanting to splice or not, but my last trip out, I had band-aids on my hands for a few days after my trip and don't want to do that again.

I am now going to buy an 80 lb spool for my larger reels (10 wt and up) and spool my 8-9 weight reels with 60.

Note that the 60 lbs Momoi is listed as the same diamter as the 80 lb Seaguar Threadlock if you are trying for a comparison. I would recommend the 80 for the largest reels.

I will also not hesitate to buy the colored version and just soak it in warm water overnight to get rid of any excess dye before loading on the reel.
Pros
  • Will not cut you.
  • Ultimate strength. Splices but also ties in standard knots well. Bimini loops or surgeons loops can be formed very simply.
Cons
  • None

Do you know how much of the 130# or 200# will fit on an International 50SW? Also, how long will the 1500 yd spool take to get to 91364 zip code? Thanks! AG
1 Answer
1300 yards of 130 lb test. 900 yards of 200 lb test. It would take approximately 3-5 business days to reach Los Angeles, CA, Topanga, CA. The amount of yards are estimations considering this question is referring to hollow core and not regular braided line. Hollow core is about 20 % thicker than solid braid.
