Great for trolling
January 22, 2020
Got the ld50 for a new trolling set up. An this reel is a dang work horse. Love the two speed function as well for when you get tired. You can pop it into the low gear and still gain line on'em. Absolute great reel for the money!!
Pros
  • 2 speed reel, loud clicker, comes with rod clamps.
Cons
  • None

Like mine alot

only thing I dont really like about it is the round handle. Wish it had a oblong one like some of the Penns and other reels i have tested out use. Other than that i have zero complaints with it.
Pros
  • Nice finish. Works well for fluke or sea bass.

great reel for vertical jigging, plus a lot more...
March 24, 2016
I have two of these reels, a STTLD20-2SPD, and a similar STTLD30-2SPD - these reels are very similar, the only difference being the 30 has a wider spool for greater line capacity. I use them for bottom fishing (vertical jigging) in Newfoundland for large cod in 150-400' of water, loaded with 50-65 pound PowerPro line. These are outstandingly excellent reels. Both the quality of craftsmanship and the performance of the reels in action are outstanding.

The high gear is excellent for picking up and retrieving a deep jig (with no fish on it) quickly back to the boat when planning a move to another location or to switch or re-bait lures - saves a lot of time - IT IS NOT FOR FIGHTING FISH. The low gear is excellent for cranking big fish off the bottom and fighting fish back to the boat. Switching gears is very easy. The drag is very smooth and performs well, although it's fine adjustment is a rather small knurled nob, not a 'star-drag'. Despite its small size, this is a very powerful reel. I expect it would handle small to medium sized tuna, mahi-mahi, sharks et c.
Pros
  • Superb workmanship, compact size, powerful, low maintenance, very tough durable reel.
Cons
  • The drag fine adjustment is a rather small knurled nob - takes a bit of getting used to. Expensive but worth the price.

Great Boat Reel

This is a great boat reel for the Gulf of Mexico. You get all the power and torque of a much larger reel, just with less line capacity.

High gear troubles
January 31, 2013
Reel looks and feels great but, as you add more drag to fight heavy fish the reel gets almost to hard to reel in high speed (when fighting big fish over structure need high speed to get out then can use low speed). You have to put in low speed to even have a chance to pull fish up from down deep because of high speed drag problems. I have the single speed in same size and it works great .
Pros
  • Looks
  • weight
  • size
Cons
  • when add drag to fight heavy fish (in high speed) very hard to reel
  • If drag problems fixed this would be a great 2 speed reel at a good price.

Great Reel
June 20, 2012
Great reel for vertical jigging handles well and is very durable after trip after trip ;however, i wish that the price would be lower because its very difficult to come up with the amount of money especially on a student salary.
Pros
  • Very smooth drag and is excellent for vertical jigging works especially well with a spinal rod.
Cons
  • I wish the price was lower since its extremely difficult to obtain the money being that I'm a student and have to focus much of my time studying rather than working.

Just picked up Saltist LD40 2 speed and trying to find a good rod to match it. Mostly going to be used for bottom fishing for groupers but will be used for trolling too off the east coast of Florida for kingfish and mahi. Right now I’m looking the the Daiwa STJ 6’6 MH and the STJ 7’ XH. What’s y’all opinion?
1 Answer
Between those two rods the MH would be the best choice for Kings and Mahi.

How do you pick out what size to get
2 Answers
We would recommend to base it off the line capacity that you need.
Submitted by: Customer Service on July 19, 2012
Size is always in a question. Look at four things: 1) how heavy do you want your reel. Are you jigging all day with the the reel in your hand or just trolling in a holder. 2) line capacity. Fast hard hitting runners, deep drop, or just near shore. Fish like kings and sharks take a lot of line fast 3) retrieve speed and power. Fast retrieve for lures and jigging then power for hook up and landing. May want two speed reel. Nothing beats low gear when bringing in a large fish. 4) Finally how much drag do you want. This will be determined by the type and size of your target fish. Big grouper, AJs, Kings can smoke a light weight drag. Your style of fishing may help you determine this also. Do you like to use heavy line and just crank in the fish or do you use lighter weight line and play the fish for all its worth. Usually once you determine the drag all else falls in place.
