Redesigned for the 20-21 season, the Daiwa Proteus Boat Conventional Rods feature a rugged and powerful design to give you the upper hand over the toughest game fish. Designed with heavy lifting in mind, these long, fast action rods provide a super strong backbone for unmatched lifting power, and are a favorite among West Coast anglers for California yellowtail and bluefin tuna. Anglers in any fishery will benefit from having a Proteus on board any time where you need a little extra power to get big fish in the boat whether you're inshore or out in the deep. Built on blanks constructed from Daiwa's High Volume Fiber (HVF) carbon technology, the Proteus achieves the superior strength and rigidity needed for coastal applications while keeping the blank thin and lightweight for comfortable fishing. Also outfitted with Daiwa's X45 Technology, these rods are designed using a 45 degree bias construction that prevents ovalization and twisting of the blank for greater hoop strength under heavy loads. The blank construction is rounded out with Daiwa's Braiding-X design, where an outer layer of carbon tape is wrapped in a crossing diagonal pattern, giving the rod blank a striking appearance as well as improving power, operability, and sensitivity. All models are equipped Fuji FazLite Tangle Free K-Guides to prevent line tangles with braid and provide long accurate casts. The ultra durable EVA Grip provides a solid, infallible connection to the rod.

nice jigging rod
December 24, 2021
west coast style jig setup paired with accurate boss valient 400 I enjoyed jigging flat, butterfly and slow pitch style jigs. I had 2 busy jig trips for jumbo copper and vermilion rockfish and lingcod in Big Sur California and was impressed with this rod reel setup. the guides slant forward for what was advertised but sheding braid bunching up on the stick while jigging. the handle materials worked perfect. on my top 3 setups.
Pros
  • forwarded guides, shrink wrap handle materials and action ratings. great looking rod.
Cons
  • none for my use

A very durable rod
January 7, 2015
This is the first branded rod that I have used. I am using the 2.1m Proteus, and I have used it to catch queen fish from shore. So far, I have caught 11 of them (average of 10kgs each) and never had any problems. And the best one was when we went on boat fishing, a giant manta ray took our bait, probably around 50kgs, this rod gave a good fight for about 2 hrs. Although we lost the fight, the rod proved its worth as we caught another queen fish the following day as if nothing happened. :)

Would this be a good rod to match with a seigler sgn for bottom fishing? Can't decide between the M or MH, I plan on using this set up for seabass and deep water fluke when i'm required to drop lead.

looking to get the 65 to 120 braid model..... will have 100 braid topped with 50 yards of 90 mono.... this rod recommends 60 mono as its high limit (45 ideal)... will i have issues with the 90 mono? and why, guide size or what?   Thanks
1 Answer
Hi Demetrious, The line rating on the Daiwa Proteus Boat Conventional rods are a suggestion for optimal use for the rod. If you are deciding on using 90lbs mono on the rod as a top shot, you should have little to no issue. It is mostly due to guide size but it will go through just fine. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with! Tight lines!

Should I get a medium heavy or heavy model for speed jigging amberjacks?
1 Answer
Hi Mickey, I would recommend a PTB76MHF Proteus Boat Conventional Rod. However since it's currently sold out I would also recommend a Daiwa SLTGJ66MHB Saltiga Jigging Conventional Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/daiwa-sltgj66mhb-saltiga-jigging-conventional-rod.html This would also be ideal for jigging applications for Amberjack and other species. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Hello...I mainly fish out of South Carolina during the spring & summer months where we mainly catch mackerel, jack crevalle, amberjack, barracuda, tarpon, sometimes tuna, and a very large variety of shark.

I just bought a Fin Nor size 30 2 speed lever drag reel and am looking to pair it with a rod that can match 65-80lb braid. Can you recommend a model? Thanks in advance.

will the H model work well with smaller game as well? OAR do you recommend the medium weight for the occasional 100 pounder?
1 Answer
We haven't seen these yet. We would suggest going with the Heavy if you have a chance at a 100 pounder. It will work well for smaller fish as well. It is rated to 50lb braid, so a 100# fish will really test its limits.
