Great jigging and surf reel
July 30, 2018
I love the fact that this reel can hold ALOT of line capacity. I use this reel for surf fishing and it can cast no problem! Pair it with a daiwa coastal sp 12ft and you are on your way!!
Pros
  • Line capacity
  • Castability
  • Handle
Cons
  • Knob tends to get stiff( just add a little oil)

Got the 5000 on sale and what a reel! Paired it with my 9 foot Ugly Stik Big Water for the perfect balance.
Pros
  • Powerful drag at 33lbs, and excellent casting ability
Cons
  • Handle is a little sloppy but not a big deal

Unbeatable Jigging Machine!
October 26, 2017
I have had one since 2007. It is a great reel, highly undervalued. As Daiwa markets is as a surf reel, people hardly realize it is a great vertical jigging reel with lots of torque for easy jigging. I used the new Daiwa BG8000 that a friend has, and although that is a great reel, it is not good for jigging. Daiwa Emcast Sport beats the new BG series all ends up when it comes to vertical speed jigging. I have made many friends and students buy this reel for jigging.
Pros
  • Value for money, torque, reliability, sturdiness
Cons
  • Weight

What pound braid would you recommend? I was debating on 40lb or maybe going up to 50lb powerpro, your thoughts?

Because this reel has a very high line capacity you will be able to use the 50 lb. and still get more than enough line. For surfcasting I generally would recommend 30 lb, as it casts much better than 40 or 50. I would go as light as you think you can get away with for your target species in order to get the best castability.
