Solid rod - Striped bass and blues
June 26, 2022
Used my coastal sp for bass and blues, caught a 35lb striped bass on it so it can handle the mustard. Ended up snapping it when a seal grabbed my bluefish off Nantucket, cool looking rod, casts great, not sure how these other guys broke them so easy, it took a 300lb seal to finally add it to my rod-graveyard.
Pros
  • Looks good (unlike tsunami rods)
  • Stiff backbone
  • lightweight
Cons
  • kinda fat

Great rod, needs little better design.
June 2, 2022
The rod was great for the money, I feel like it could’ve used a 50/50 split instead of 70/30. Seems all the backbone is in the bottom half.

Faulty blank
December 3, 2019
Got this rod for a tarpon trip to Florida the 9’ 1-4 oz was casting a 2.5oz lure and snapped on a cast on the second day hoping they will replace it even have video proof love the rod just hope it was a faulty blank and the next one is better
Pros
  • Love the way it feels in the hands
Cons
  • Rod tip snapped on me the second day of use

9' 1-4 oz.

I picked this rod up for lighter tackle shore fishing and i really enjoy it. I can still get pretty good distance if i'm throwing 1/2 oz jigs but the sweet spot really is that 1 1/2 oz to 2 oz range. Landed a 30 lb striper with it on my first outing with it throwing a weightless sluggo. Flicks it out there no problem. I do wish the butt section was a tiny bit thinner like the emblem but that's just me being picky. Good stick.

Broke it twice this year!
November 21, 2018
Unfortunately, I have had issues with the 10'6 1-4 oz rated rod. First time breaking it the top piece broke between the first and second guide while fighting a decent sized Jack Crevalle. I sent the rod back to Daiwa through warranty and received a new one 2 weeks later... same model. After 2 months it finally broke again when pulling up a 5 lb bluefish from the jetty. A couple well known youtubers have reviewed this rod and received multiple reports of the medium 1-4 oz models breaking. It was suggested that there is a manufacturing defect with these particular models. I have heard great things about the 11 foot MH but haven't tested it.
Pros
  • Very light weight, casts far, good sensitivity, smooth guides
Cons
  • Broke twice, weak rod specifically 10'6 1-4 oz, tip of the butt does not grip well with surfaces and slides easily

I have a shimano spheros 8000 looking at the 10ft m or Mh. Looking for a versatile rod to launch sp minnows and bait from surf and rocks. I was wondering if the mh would be able to launch sp minnows is they are usually a little over an oz
1 Answer
For lighter baits such as the sp minnow the 10 foot medium may be the better choice.

I have a battle II 5k looking for a rod to fish off jettys during the spring and fall that I could use to replace my 8' TICA dolphin 1-3. Mainly casting SPs, bombers, bucktails, and shads. I am looking for a little more casting distance. Would you reccomend the 9 to pair with the battle?

The Temple Fork GIS SCS 902-2 Gary Loomis Tactical Series Surf Rod - 9 ft. would pair up well with your battle 2 and would greatly increase your casting distance.

I would recommend using a 6000-8000 size reel when it comes to a 12ft rod, mainly to balance out the rod and then to also get proper casting distance.

Hi... can you suggest some good reels to pair with the rod? I'm looking at the 11' CLSP1102MHFS model. Will the Penn Slammer III SLAIII6500 pair well considering the rod rating is 15 - 14 lbs? Any other cheaper reels that would pair well? The Penn seems to be on the higher side for me at the moment. I'm looking to use for Surf Fishing and would require a reel that would work well for casting. Thanks for all the help

I'm looking to build a midrange lightweight surf setup for plugging in the 1-3 oz range on NJ beaches. I'm 5"11 180lbs with decent strength so I can handle my own. As much as I would love a VS vr I can't justify the price. Leaning more towards pairing either this or a mojo surf with possibly a Penn slammer 3. Not sure what length would be most beneficial for the application I'm looking for. Thanks in advance. I'm also open to any other suggestions.

The St Croix MSS106MM2 Mojo Surf Spinning Rods paired with a Penn Slammer 6500 would be a good combo for the application you will be using it for. Thank you for considering TackleDirect for your fishing needs.

November 29, 2015
What is the weight of the 11' heavy rod and is it a 2pc 50/50 split! Would this rod be good for throwing 150gm poppers or sticks?
1 Answer
The rod weighs 14.4 ounces and the butt section's measurement of the rod is 59" while the tip section of the rod measures approximately 90". This rod is built to fish Daiwa's SP Minnows, so it would be great for fishing lures. But, I believe the 3 to 10 ounce rating is more ideal for fishing bait or lures heavier than a couple ounces in the surf. Although the fast action tip is ideal for lure fishing. Overall this is a great all round rod you could use to fish bait or lures depending on your preference during your current fishing session. Opposed to having two different surf rods, one for lures and one for bait.... You can now have one rod for both! Oh the possibilities... The Saragosa 8000 would be a great fit for this rod. It is also an affordable price for a great rod to add to your quiver.

Personally, I would recommend the MH 10ft to match with the Daiwa Emblem Pro EX 5000. But, if you prefer the 9ft and want to shy away from looking into purchasing the 10ft than definitely go with the 9ft MH. It would handle the reel nicely, I just think the 10ft MH would be more ideal.
