Surfcaster, The Ultimate Surf Fishing Guide is an extremely intuitive William A. "Doc" Muller book. The book begins with the history of the sport from the mid 1800s right up to the new millennium, starting the novice off with a few chapters on how to, tackle suggestions and estimated costs.

But that's just the beginning. Other chapters discuss understanding different beach venues from the ocean to the bays, casting and retrieving techniques, knots and leaders, six detailed chapters on lures that catch fish, catch and release, four wheel drive vehicles, bait fishing techniques, the pros and cons of joining a surf club, and setting up a productive strategy for consistent success.

According to Fred Golofaro, Senior Editor, The Fisherman Magazine, " He leaves no stones unturned... a total treatise on the use of every type of lure that belongs in the surf bag." Zeno Hromin, Editor-In-Chief of the Surfcaster's Journal Magazine says, "I was mesmerized by it...and I highly recommend it."

As I do agree with the previous reviewer, this book is very opinionated. However, as Doc explains, in the Preface of the book,(most do not bother to read this) he does state that this book is of one man's opinion. His recommendations are not Gospel. I prefer Shimano Reels and the author prefers Van Staal. Doesn't mean you are going to catch anymore fish with the latter set up. It is just personal preference.

If you can get passed the opinions on gear, not all of them are bad by the way, then you will be treated to many good points and tactics the author gives from his many years of experience. He uses a very simple approach to surf fishing. It is very easy to follow. And it works! He also stresses not breaking the bank the first year in the sport. He suggests you start off low, and go from there. Which is a point I do agree with.

I recommend this book to the novice, who is starting out in the sport. Again, you do not have to take his recommendations on rods and reels. However, you should buy a quality reel and rod, to keep you fishing longer and without issue. You do not want a malfunction when you have a trophy on the other end of the line! I further recommend Doc's second book, Fishing with Bucktails, as well. Again, he gives a no nonsense, basic approach to fishing with this seemingly under used lure. As it was by myself until reading this book.
Pros
  • Very good and basic tactics
  • Some good points about buying gear for the first time
  • Explains lure choices
  • Explains Stripe Bass Habitat
  • Brief explanation on reading the beach
Cons
  • Very opinionated

There are better books out there on this subject. the author never explains why not to buy 2 piece rods I have fished 2 piece rods for 35 years and have caught just about everything that swims in the surf without issues and they last. while I do agree you should invest in a quality rod and reel spending 1,000 dollars on a combo dosen't mean will will catch any more trophys or any less dogfish and skates remember the fish don't know if your set up cost you 250 or 1,000 dollars
