The Van Staal VS Series Spinning Reels combine the art of design and manufacturing into a reel of uncompromising strength and simplicity. The frame, rotor and spool are machined from billet aluminum for unyielding strength, unlike other high-end reels that are made from weak die cast aluminum and plastic. Internal parts are made from the highest grades of metals available like stainless steel and titanium. The patented waterproof maintenance free drag system runs on two stainless steel ball bearings for silky smooth drag performance under the harshest conditions. The main gear and pinion are hardened stainless steel. The large diameter main shaft is made from solid titanium, and mirror polished for smooth operation. Choose from a selection of 5 different models, including the VS100, VS150, VS200, VS250, and VS300 to suit your particular needs. Available in gold, black and silver.
Sealed, Waterproof Performance!
One of the VS Series' most famous features is its sealed, waterproof drag system and gear case. Even if you are not in the habit of submerging your reel while fishing, regular exposure to the elements alone is enough to compromise the integrity of the drag system and inner gears. Anyone who's hooked into a monster only to feel the drag slip or hear that unmistakable coffee-grinder sound coming from their reel, knows how painfully true this can be. That's why when we set out to build the market's most durable and reliable fishing reel, we knew that drag and gear protection was critical for consistent peak performance. To achieve this protection the VS Series' design uses watertight seals throughout the spool, body and handle assembly. No other reel on the market offers this level of protection and that's why no other reel on the market will do for serious anglers looking for the ultimate in hard-fishing performance. Control the Fight - Land The Fish!
For experienced anglers, the challenge is not always finding and hooking big fish, it's landing them. That's why the VS Series line of spinning reels is designed with a Main Gear that actually helps you fight and land the fish. Made from hardened stainless steel, the Main Gear will never slip or strip under pressure. The VS Series Main Gear is also oversized to provide more fish-fighting torque per crank of the handle. Translation: You control the fight ... not the fish.

The Best!

My son's been using this reel fishing the piers in Florida for years. We expect it to last for many more. He's landed Spanish, kings, cobia, and has hooked some tarpon with it. It's pricey but worth it if you're serious about your saltwater fishing.

It's a VS. You get what you pay for.

This reel has swam out to rocks, been dragging through the sand, used as a hammer, and landed me some serious fish. I don't know if I've ever cleaned it in the 3 years I've owned it, it still performs as new and will continue to do so. Grease it up in the winter and let her eat. I do hate the stock knob, just get the power knob you won't regret it. Now, if VS would catch up to other brands and start making all sizes in a RH retrieve....

Light but Strong!!!
August 14, 2018
This is my go to surf reel. Granted we don't have tough conditions like the NW down here in Florida, but I don't fish like the normal Florida surf fisher. I go about stomach high and cast and for me not to worry if my reel gets salt water is a great relief. I took one star because of the line lay. Yes there's a way you can spool to prevent this, but for this price this shouldn't be an issue. I wish I could find a lefty silver one. The power knob is a must!!! It not only looks great it feels great.
Pros
  • Super light, super smooth, strong drag.
Cons
  • Line lay, You can see every scratch on the black one.

Van Staal VS150L is a BEAST
February 18, 2017
I bought a 2nd VS150L as a backup to my original. I've caught big tarpon, giant golden dorado, and big blues within the last 4 years without getting my reel serviced. until very recently I had to service the original 150L because I didn't have the quad seal alignment tool to tighten the frame of the spool which had gotten loose after the last 4 years of fighting beastly fish. I decided to buy a backup just in case and will purchase this tool (tool is included in VS Service Kit or can find in hardware store) so I will have it on me on future fishing excursions. All in all if you want to battle big fish having the confidence that the reel will perform with perfection and won't give out under pressure from the biggest fish then I highly recommend this reel.
Pros
  • *Reel with last a lifetime *Beautiful design, super strong gears, body, and smooth drag
Cons
  • *May take a little time getting used to using bailess spinning reel

Unbelievable reel!

Purchased the VS150 about a year ago and have used it for fresh and saltwater. Big cats and stripers in fresh, everything you can imagine in salt. This reel pricey but worth every penny. I will be buying the VS250 today.
And dealing with Tackle Direct has been fantastic. Ordered the reel then noticed after receiving it there was a VS combo for the same price. Tackle Direct promptly sent me the rod. No problems. Thanks guys!

Are there any other differences besides size range, between the vs, vsx, and x series/models?
1 Answer
The VSX and the X are the same reel. The VS and the X series are different. The X series is the newest models to date for the Van Staal line which has a new clickable drag system that allows you to have better control of your drag.

I want to buy a VSX200, is the line capacity accurate. 500yds of 40lb? Is it accurate, or off. I will be using minimal backing with 500yd spools of braid. How much is the accurate line capacity? Thanks.
2 Answers
The line capacity on Van Staal reels is generally accurate. It also depends on what kind of line you are using. Different brands will fit slightly different amounts of braid.
Submitted by: David on October 30, 2015
It also depends on how you spool it, by hand or machine... One customer was able to get 485 yards of 40lb braid because they spooled it rather tightly, they said they "pact it nice and tight". But, I do not recommend trying to spool it as tight as you can...

your ad suggests that Van Stall is closing up shop. Is this accurate?
1 Answer
No. They will be releasing a redesigned model line this Winter / Spring. The new models feature an improved oscillation system for better line lay and 10% more line capacity. They also have increased the drag range by 50%, added a clicker to the drag knob, and made finite adjustment to the drag. This allows you to go from zero to full drag within 1 complete turn of the drag knob.

When you say Right or Left hand for the Van Stahls, do you mean retrieve. I am right handed and cast right handed but I retrieve left handed with spin reels. For right handed models what side is the crank on?
1 Answer
Right handed models are standard with the rod and reel supported by the right hand and the reel handle retrieve with the left-hand.

I noticed that you have left hand and have more of the right hand retrieve reels. Just to clarify for myself since i am a bit confused on which model to buy. I reel with the left hand and support the rod with my strong hand (right hand). Do I buy a left hand retrieve or left hand retrieve?
1 Answer
Van Staal reels are standard with the handle held in the left hand and the rod/reel support in the right. The models designated as a "left-hand retrieve" are designed with the handle held in the right hand and the rod/reel support in the left. Example: VS150 - the retrieve handle is in left hand VS150L - the retrieve handle is in the right hand

Is this reel switchable to LH wind, or do I need a different model?

That particular model is not. The only Van Staal reel that can be switched to left or right hand retrieve is the VM150, TD code "VAN-0071".
