The Van Staal X-Series Reels are based on the same foundation that made Van Staal legendary for power and durability.  A completely sealed and waterproof reel machined out of aeronautics grade 6061-T6 aluminum, with a solid titanium shaft, hardened stainless steel main gear and pinion, and patented waterproof sealed drag.  The Van Staal VS and VSB Reels are designed for a lifetime of fishing.  The New X-Series reels now have the X-Wrap oscillation system that lays the line completely flat, designed to cast further and allow for greater drag pressures when using braided line.  The drag system has also been improved allowing for greater drag range.

  • Fully-machined and sealed waterproof aluminum body
  • Solid, nickel-titanium manual bail
  • Sealed waterproof drag system
  • MicroClick drag tuning accuracy
  • Heavy-duty stainless steel spiral-bevel main gear
  • Titanium-nitride treated center shaft
  • Titanium-nitride line roller

The Van Staal spinning reel is a beast, and a beauty at the same time. There is nothing flimsy about this reel. It feels and looks solid, yet sleek and simple. As another review pointed out, the bail will not close prematurely during a cast, causing the loss of bait, or worse yet, your favorite, expensive lure.

My only complaint would be that for its size, this reel is heavier than most. It might be more noticeable to me since the other reel I fish with often, is a Shimano Ci4+, which, for its size, is lighter than most.
Pros
  • Sturdy, quality build,
  • Corrosion resistant,
  • Smooth casting
Cons
  • Heavy for its size

Great Reel

I like having a bail on a spinning reel. And no, no matter how hard you cast the bail will not come down on this reel and snap off one of your $20 plugs. If you want a quality bailed spinning reel for rough surf this is for you.

Van Staal 250
April 21, 2019
I bought my Van Staal 250 over 10 years ago now, it still looks like new, and works just as good as ever, when I first used it I caught a giant stingray approx 6ft across, the drag packed it in and the drag clicker broke I sent it back to Van Staal, who fixed it for free, as you would expect with a new reel, and never had any issues since I've caught marlin giant stingrays, and many many other species over the years, without a service but probably should due to the amount of use it's had, I will be buying another one soon, if you buy one of these reels, you like myself will not need another.
Pros
  • light weight, and tough, also an awesome looking reel
Cons
  • if you do buy one, get Van staal to service your drag before you take delivery for piece of mind.

It is so awesome to be surf fishing and see people's face as I get hit wave after wave. I live in South Texas and surf fish for blacktip sharks. Yes, it does Great. I feel invincible with this reel. Plus I just got in my new vr150, it is also awesome. Van Staal has made my life a better place.
Pros
  • Awesome. ..period! !!!
Cons
  • There is none. But someday I dream of a Van Staal surf rod worthy of the name. How awesome would that be!

JUNK
May 1, 2018
Had this reel used it about 6 times in about 4 months, caught some fish, loved it. The last time I used it, roughly 6 months after purchase, I was fighting a 10 lb redfish and the stainless bolt that holds the knob on snapped. Now, I’ve been waiting over 2 months for a “backordered” bolt!!! Chinese JUNK!! Idk how a company that sells $1000 reels has such shitty customer service! Never buying Van Staal again! Got myself a new 13 oz black shiny sinker for Heavin’ in Hatty!!!
Pros
  • Good looking
  • Can get dunked (thats about it)
Cons
  • Fell apart in under 6 months
  • Warranty sucks
  • Customer service sucks
  • Have to send it back once a year $100 +
  • Gets stiff in the winter

Does the x wrap oscillation really help with braided lines or is the older vsb models just as good
1 Answer
It does help to an extent, but from what I have heard the difference in distance is not noticeable. In order to get better line lay on the older models, you just have to make sure that when it is spooled it has a "hump" in the mono backing. This will ensure that the line lays on there well and you won't get the dreaded "hourglass" shaped spool.
