The Van Staal X-Series Reels are based on the same foundation that made Van Staal legendary for power and durability.  A completely sealed and waterproof reel machined out of aeronautics grade 6061-T6 aluminum, with a solid titanium shaft, hardened stainless steel main gear and pinion, and patented waterproof sealed drag.  The Van Staal VS and VSB Reels are designed for a lifetime of fishing.  The New X-Series reels now have the X-Wrap oscillation system that lays the line completely flat, designed to cast further and allow for greater drag pressures when using braided line.  The drag system has also been improved allowing for greater drag range.

  • Fully-machined and sealed waterproof aluminum body
  • Sealed waterproof drag system
  • MicroClick drag tuning accuracy
  • Heavy-duty stainless steel spiral-bevel main gear
  • Titanium-nitride treated center shaft
  • Titanium-nitride line roller

Beast of a reel
February 21, 2022
I purchased the Van Staal VS200BXP from Tackle Direct in November 2018 - since then, I've put it through an absolute beating and its performed flawlessly.

Outside of the largest stripers, the VS200 is a bit more power than you'd need in the surf in the northeast. However, it's been great for trips to Cabo San Lucas targeting roosters.

It's not as smooth as a saltiga or stella, but what it lacks in smoothness it makes up for in being pretty much bomb proof - a tradeoff I'm happy to make. I've dunked it more time than I can count, laid it in sand... it does not seem to care.

4 Stars instead of 5 only because the stock handle should be better... but if paired with the Van Staal Power Grip Handle Knob...chef’s kiss
Pros
  • indestructible, excessive power that's never in doubt
Cons
  • not a smooth as alternatives, stock handle isn't great (recommend upgrading with the the Van Staal Power Grip Handle Knob)

This reel is the work horse for the true surf fisherman, no bells and whistles, cranks like a coffee grinder until it gets broken in, but it is the field tested no fail sealed reel out there.
Pros
  • great reel
Cons
  • 1) Made in China a reel this costly can still be made in the USA without much profit loss...
  • 2) The knob on handle is thin and uncomfortable, they make an optional power knob accesorry for 65 bucks...which I, and many others have complained should be standard equipment on this reel for the price tag it commands.

Best All-Around Spinning Reel
February 8, 2021
VS150BXP is a work horse! Every saltwater angler should have this in their arsenal. This reel, paired with a 7ft spinning rod, proved itself time and time again against gator bluefish and cow striped bass.

Never a doubt in my mind that this reel could conquer any fish that took the line.

Been surf fishing all my life, now retired on North Padre Island, and have daily access to the Padre Island National Seashore, one of the top surf fishing locations in the world, 60 miles of driving access to totally non-commercialized seashore. The Van Staal, third one in my tackle, is the only way to go. Handles any and all that takes the hook. As my father told me, “only costs a little bit more to go first class.” Van Staal is first class.
Thanks to my wife for getting me this for Christmas, and she enjoys hers too.

Does the black paint on this reel ever chip off from use??.. And does the stainless steel ever rust!??
1 Answer
The anodized finish does not really chip, but it will certainly scratch if dropped on rocks or other hard surfaces. The silver color does hide blemishes better since the metal underneath the anodizing is a silverish color. As far as rust, that should never be a problem. The body of the reel is aircraft grade aluminum, holds up extremely well to abuse.

Do the x series staals have the hourglass line like the Vs series or is that fixed with the x wrap system? Also what is the max drag on the 150 size? Thanks!
1 Answer
Van Staal does not provide a maximum drag rating, but the reel has a strong drag system that is more than sufficient for any 30 to 40 lb. braid class applications. The line laying issues with the VS have been addressed in the VS X-Series. The VS X-Series reels will not "hour glass" the line on the spool.
