Love this reel!

First Van Stall and I'm not disappointed. Perfect for my uses. I pair it up with with a 10'6 St croix. Balance is great. Could see it being good on a 9' as well.
Pros
  • Great reel for the surf! Can tear down and service yourself witch I love. Gets you in touch with your gear and leaves you worry free
Cons
  • None so far.

4 years strong

I was skeptical when I got this reel because of all the hype, boy was I wrong. It's my go to reel for everything now, I use it for lakes, ponds, surf fishing and deep sea fishing. While it may not be as smooth as a Shimano or Diawa, I haven't screwed it up by dropping it in the surf or getting dunked in the waves while standing in the surf fishing. I have destroyed the others doing that. It just happens when you fish. I'm not willing to try that with a Stella or Saltiga for twice the price. Still feels brand new 4 years later, no failures.
Pros
  • Built to last, holds a ton of 30 lb braid. Handles all fishing conditions for me.
Cons
  • I don't like the knob on reel handle.

VS has some more work to do
March 3, 2020
I own a VR50 and VR200. Both were excellent out of the box. Extremely light and smooth, both the drag as well as when cranking. Within a month though, the handle had torn off the VR50. Within 4 months, the line roller broke, the main gear failed due to a shimming issue and saltwater had gotten into the VR200. The good news is that VS quickly addressed all issues. The bad news is that these reels don’t yet perform long term as marketed in the surf. VS has improved the seals on the VR200 but now those reels are noticeably harder to crank out of the box. I hope they continue to improve the execution on this particular line.
Pros
  • -very light
  • -very smooth
  • -customer service aka Craig
Cons
  • -earlier models not waterproof as marketed
  • -handle connection not durable enough
  • -shimming issues with main gear

VR150 Better Than Expected
August 24, 2019
Was originally hesitant to buy a VR after some feedback on early models and problems seen with friends. However as of this review it appears Van Staal has made quite a few changes and improvements. The Reel is smooth out of box especially for a sealed reel, feels substantial in the hand without being heavy and looks great.
Pros
  • Fully Sealed
  • Light for its size and capacity
  • Smoother than a standard VS(X)
  • Bailess kit included
  • Still expensive but not compared to a VSX or Zeebaas
  • Looks great
  • VS tool included
Cons
  • Still made in China
  • Not cheap
  • Great for many applications especially the surf but still isn?t a VS or Zeebaas
  • Finish could be better

How will the VR200 match up w/ 11’ ODM Jigster and 10’ St. Croux Mojo? The Jigster is my primary rod for the Cape Cod Canal & RI rocks while the Mojo is used in the surf on the open beach. Looking at this reel to handle all scenarios. Could I go smaller?
1 Answer
The VR200 will work perfect for all the scenarios you listed. The VR150 would be the smallest you can go.

Hi is this reel smooth enought for vertical jigging?
1 Answer
This reel is generally designed for surf fishing. Because of the gaskets on the reel, it is not as smooth and effortless of a retrieve as you would get from the likes of a Shimano or Daiwa reel. If smooth is what you are looking for I'd suggest looking into a Shimano Saragosa, Twin Power, or Stella.

Does it have s.steel gearing mechanism (stainless steel main and pinion gear) like in older models?
1 Answer
Yes it does. The main gear and pinions are made from hardened stainless steel, and the main gear will never slip or strip on you when under pressure. Also, the main gear is over sized to provide more fish-fighting torque per crank of the handle, which means you control the fight, not the fish. Because of this it increases your landing to loosing ratio of fish.
