Went in with some friends on the buy 2 get 1 free sale. Best choice ive made this year on tackle. Wanted this reel for the durability of fishing on shore and is great on the boat. Reel is a little heavier than the saragosa 6000 that i looked at, which is about equal in size. This thing should take some abuse which i indend to do. Caught some decent stripers on it and the drag is very smooth. I love my older stella 4000 that i use all the time but got sick of worrying about marking it up on the rocks so fits the bill perfect.

Cons
- Little heavier than the equal shimanos I looked at but have used it for hours at a time and didnt notice too bad.

Great reel, fit and finish are superb. I use it for everything from snook, tarpon, redfish to offshore grouper and amberjack. Silky smooth drag and performs flawlessly. Mine cranked in legal grouper after legal grouper while my friends Penn Torque ate it!

Im not bashing this reel but it did fail me after about 2 years. I fish a lot at the sebastian inlet which is definitely tough on reels but I bought this reel so I wouldnt have to worry about reels dying. I also kept great care of it.

- pretty heavy and if you are going to be casting hard and far then the bail will absolutely flip over and will break your lure off.

Used this reel for EVERYTHING. Surf casting stripers, sight Fishing Cobia, jigging for AJs and other bottom critters, etc. Its been an absolute workhorse. No issues yet after year one. Not SUPER strong drag, but gets the job done for sure. Paired with shimano teramar northeast edition.

Solid heavy reel with a few problems

I got it on black friday for 300 bucks....figured why not... At first I was impressed on how solid the Reel was but then later I ran into a few problems. My first issue is the drag knob it can be very hard to turn it when it's wet and slippery also there is lots of vertical play in the spool, lastly it seems like as you increase the drag, the knop gets it is harder to turn... The reel is not fully seal but yet its a egg beater.... Either save up and get the vr or get something else.... For the full $450 it is no way worth it

Yes, you can use higher then to 30# test. A 50# would probably be the heavest line test you can put on the vm150 without giving up to much line capacity.

This would be a good reel large ocean going stripers with techniques like snag and drop, chunking, jigging, and casting heavier plugs. I wouldn't want to use this on a lighter inshore rod for casting lighter baits like plastics in the rivers or back bays.

The VM150 would not be too big to balance well with the rod, however you might prefer a shorter rod for jigging. I would suggest looking at the Shimano Trevala.

Not the same as the VS and VSB series is. The following is from the Van Staal website;
The VM Series, like all Van Staal reels, is designed to be extremely durable and is built with the highest quality materials. However, unlike the VS and VSB reels, the VM is not designed to be submerged and periodic service by the consumer is necessary to keep this reel operating at peak performance. The VM Series also has a serviceable side cove and the entire reel can be disassembled and reassembled easily by the consumer with a limited number of tools.
If your VM is submerged or exposed to extremely harsh saltwater conditions it is important that it be opened up, cleaned and re-lubricated. We recommend your reel be periodically serviced by a Van Staal Authorized Service and Warranty Center to maintain the reel's optimal performance.
