Tsunami Carbon Shield II Boat Popping Rods are designed with ALPS Guides. Premium Hypolon grips for maximum comfort. Made with feather light IM7 graphite blanks with D16 nanotech and unique carbon fiber design. D16 Nanotech blank technology consists of multi-directional layers of IM7 carbon fiber that have been injected with nano resin and wrapped in 8 different angles which evenly disperse flexural force in 16 directions. This combination provides an extremely lightweight blank that resists twist and adds hoop strength. These rods make casting to, hooking, and fighting big fish as easy as it gets. Great choice whether you are jigging Tuna in the Northeast or battling Grouper down South.

Good Value Popping Rod, Description Is Suspect.
June 11, 2021
I purchased this rod to pair with my Daiwa BG5000 spinner to use for tuna and yellowtail out here on the west coast. I wanted something to throw poppers and for the price and description this looked like a good fit. The fit and balance between the rod and reel is fine, a bg4000 size reel would probably fit fine as well, but I wouldn't go much smaller.

There are a few things to note, however. The description on the website lists 3-8oz as the lure rating, but on the rod it is printed as 3-6oz (thats a 25% lighter lure than advertised on the website). Additionally the grips are listed as hypolon, but the label on the rod lists them as EVA foam, they definitely feel more like hypolon in my experience tho so it could be a Tsunami issue. Lastly, the guides are listed as "ALPS" guides, which they are, but it makes no mention of the insert material. They are aluminum oxide, which I understand to be about the lowest quality insert that is still usable for braided line.

My last "Complaint" would be that the ALPS reel seat, which is aluminum, was kind of marred like it had been scuffed in the rack or during production, not any big scratched or scores, but some marks on the seat that I would not expect, and would not accept if I had purchased the rod in person, but shipping it back is too big of a hassle to mess with it.

All in all for 180 bucks it feels good in hand, I haven't had a chance to take it out onto the water yet, but from pulling on it, it feels like it will be able to fish 40# (assuming 40-65# braid and a 40# leader with drag set at about 14#)
Pros
  • Affordable way to get into a popping set up
  • Comfortable grips
  • easy to stow in a back seat because it comes apart
Cons
  • Website info and info printed on the rod do not match
  • Rod had some cosmetic blemishes on the reel seat
  • Lower quality guide insert material

How does this rod compare to the 8' tsunami carbon shield 2 spinning rod?

It has a lower power rating, slower action, and yet handles heavier lures? I don't understand.

1 Answer
Hi Sebastian, The Tsunami TSCSHDPSII762H-B Carbon Shield II Boat Popping Rod has a higher Braided Line Weight rating of 40-80lb and Lure weight rating of 3-8oz than that of the Tsunami TSCSHDII801XH-B Carbon Shield II Spinning Rod being 30-65lb Braided Line and 1-4oz Lure weights. This suggests that even though they may use similar blanks the 7'6" Popping rod model: TSCSHDPSII762H-B is slightly different and stronger of the two models. The TSCSHDPSII762H-B Popping rod is made to be used for tuna and pelagic fish while the TSCSHDII801XH-B Carbon Shield II Spinning Rod is made to be used only for inshore fishing applications. Will this pair well with a Salt-X 6000?

Can a rubber gimble be attached?

Would you recommend this rod for fishing from jetties, piers, passes, and bridges using artificial bait?

1 Answer
Hi Sebastian, The Tsunami TSCSHDPSII762H-B Carbon Shield II Boat Popping Rod would pair great with a Tsunami Salt X 6000. Based on your fishing applications with this rod I would recommend the Tsunami TSAWESS-962M Airwave Elite Surf Spinning Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/tsunami-tsawess-962m-airwave-elite-surf-spinning-rod.html This rod would pair great with a Tsunami Salt X 6000 reel and would be ideal for fishing piers, jetties, and bridges with artificial lures. Is this a true one-piece as listed, or does it join together at the handle fore grip like many other popping rods do?
1 Answer
This rod is a 2 piece, 70/30 split roughly.
