Great rod for the money
April 29, 2022
I bought one of these while I was waiting for a custom rod to be repaired. It's a very decent rod for the money. Paired with a long-cast reel, this rod will let you throw lures in the same league as some of the big boys. I still have this rod around, and use it as a guest rod when friends visit and don't bring their own gear. They are usually impressed by the distance they are able to squeeze out of this rod.

It fights fish great. Plenty of backbone - I've never felt under-gunned even with some pretty decent fish.

I would very much recommend this to someone just getting into surfcasting or not looking to break the bank on some gear to get into fish.

I have many rods and this is my favorite rod for stripers, blues etc. Caught a 70# striper last year on it.
Pros
  • Light, casts well, strong, tough and affordable

Versatile rod, 70/30 split is great!
March 4, 2022
I like the 70/30 split. It gives me some extra confidence in the spine, and I don't have to worry about half the rod getting out of alignment.

The 3/4-3 Oz rating is great for tossing 2oz spoons and plugs in the surf.

This clearly isn't an 8nbait rod, but feels very versatile. I wanted something that could do surf and jetties, and this really fits the bill for me.

February 6, 2022
Love this rod! Paired with a Diawa 3500 is quite the combo! Gets me out far enough in the surf for some sweet Pompano action and strong enough to wrestle in big reds and snook!
Pros
  • Light weight and strong!
Cons
  • Honestly my only con is that it?s a two piece which really isn?t a big deal.

Strong and light
December 7, 2021
Great rod so far. Will cast a 6oz weigh and a 12 inch bluefish pretty well. Had one shark on and I forgot to loosen the drag on a 10500 with 80lb braid. The rod bent all the way over but did not break. Before I could get to it, the rod holder broke and the combo went surfing. I chased after it but wasnt quick enough. I thought it would be half way to Cuba the next day. Some pompano fishermen actually snagged it the next morning in the trough (shark not still attached) and gave it back to me. I rinsed it off and it is as good as new. Must be a tough rod to put up with that abuse.
Pros
  • Light, durable, casts well.
Cons
  • The rod end butt was slightly too large to fit in the rod holder tube. I shaved it down a tiny bit with a fillet knife and made it fit.

8’8” Great Light Surf Rod
January 6, 2021
The 8’8” is perfect for playing with schoolie stripers, blues and albies. It does best with 3/4 to 1.5oz lures, doesn’t really load well with 1/2oz but it will work well enough for that in a pinch. The action is a little soft but overall it works really well and that seems to help with throwing lighter plugs like small mag darters without having them wobble as much on the cast.
Pros
  • Light, casts great
Cons
  • A little soft/whippy (on the 8?8? model) but not bad

Tsunamai Airwave Elite 1102M
December 7, 2020
I have several many more expensive rods ........... But, I always gravitate to this one .......

I throw a lot of swimbaits at the Cape Cod Canal, which cast terribly ..... This rod gets the most out of them ......

Also casting metals into the wind on the beach, this rod outperforms my Century for distance ...... lighter lure scale, a little looser ......

I also have a 11'4" I use on the Canal for jigging heavy 5/6oz, in heavy current .... Very stiff to get the jig off the bottom and can turn big fish in heavy current .....

For me, the very best value in surf rods ....... sub $200.00 .......

What would you recommend for 1-4 the 11ft Medium or the 11ft Heavy?

Do you think 4oz would be pushing it with the Medium or I'd have to take it easy casting 4oz with it?

1 Answer
For 1-4 oz lures I would go for the Medium Heavy, less stress on the rod.

I received the answer from tackle direct for my previous question of whether to buy the lamiglas insane serf series 10' MH or one of these rods. They advised me to get the lamiglas but, I have heard rumors of the warranty being trash on a lamiglases part, while tsunami has the excellent warranty. So if I do buy the lamiglas will tackle Direct replace it or will I have to go through lamiglas? Also if I happen to break the lamiglas after one year and it is because of the rods defect will I still be able to replace it?
1 Answer
Our return is a 30 day un-used policy. Any broken rod within that one year warranty would need to be covered by the manufacture. Lamiglas and Tsunami equally have great warranties.

1 Answer
XH Refers to the stiffness of the rod. If you plan on using moving baits, I recommend getting something that will bend more at the tip. Like a H or MH. 6000 or 6500 is the right class of reel for that type of rod.

1 Answer
A Battle II 5000 is not going to be too big for your 9'6" rod, though a 10' rod would fit slightly better. There is no need for the switch unless you would prefer the extra half of a foot to match the extra bit of power.

A VR50 would not balance out well on a 10'6" surf rod since it is extremely lightweight, at around 9oz but you could certainly use it on one.
Submitted by: Brian on March 23, 2020
The VR50 would be really light on a 10'6" and would not balance out as well as a larger reel. You could certainly pair them up, but it would hinder your performance in terms of casting distance.

what is the best rod for slammer3 4500? Using 3/4-4 oz spoons and jigs in surf. Need to cast far
1 Answer
The 9'3" or 10' will pair with a 4500 well. If you want to cast for we suggest going with the 10'.

Looking at the Tsunami Airwave Elite.  I'd pair with a Diawa BG4000.   Primary use will be for plugging and tossing lighter plastics (1-3 oz) from the sand on Nantucket.  I have a wide assortment of surf rods but most are too heavy for all-day casting.

I'm looking for a surf rod that is less fatiguing and has decent 'action' to make catching schoolie stripers and blues a bit more fun.    At the same time, I'd like to be able to drift the occasional eel (without added weight).

Any suggestions?

The Mojo Surf from St. Croix is a lighter rod blank but with great action and backbone.

Would the Van Staal vr 50 be a good match for this rod(9,6) model?
1 Answer
The VR50 works best with 7-8' rods. It is used commonly on lighter 9' set-ups. It can work, but the 150 size is more ideal.

I'm looking for a good all round rod for surf fishing the DE. Surf, bait being used is bunker mullet and clams. what would you recommend to go along with a Penn Spin fisher V 6500
1 Answer
The Penn Spinfisher V 6500 would be a perfect reel for that application. The 9' 3" or the 10" rod would pair with the reel great.
