Quality Rods that made me a striper pro!
August 1, 2018
This is my second set of Maja Rods, part of the system that trolls bunker spoons for big bass. Tony Maja spent a lifetime perfecting this approach so those of us who use it can catch stripers like a pro. And the rods do all the work so trolling wire is no longer drudgery. Get the rods and all the Maja gear, find a how to article or video and become a striper pro!

ok rods but trolling is tough nowadays
November 4, 2021
These rods look like old Harnells but they have different actions. I had a bad time landing bluefish with the single hooks and switched to Kaiju trebles. Now they hook everything that looks at them including a variety of sharks up to 100 lbs The rods held up under the stress of 100 lb fish and could easily handle the largest stripers Unfortunately all I see lately is whales dolphins and sharks but no bluefish or stripers .
Pros
  • They can handle big fish on wire line .I never saw a bunker spoon rod take such a beating and they liked it.
Cons
  • They look like the old Harnells but the action is different..

What can I say before I fish them!
May 2, 2021
All high quality components and that makes them a great buy. (I bought 2 Tony Maja Bunker Spoon Wire Line Trolling rods). My Dad and I used to troll wire out by Middle Ground lighthouse In the LI Sound. It sure beat up the rods. So I checked these over real good. It has all the components listed, but, they are manufactured well. By obviously experienced rod. builders. The spline seems where it belongs. The gimbal and reel seat are Aluminum and well seated. (Not shifting or spinning). The guides are tough and especially well bound, taped and epoxied to the rod. The epoxy finish is glossy and even. The guides are the most important to me as all of our rods from other brands used to break where the guide met the guide mount and rattled around on the wire after they had broken. Ugh!. That being said, I can't wait to try them out. It seems that Tony really did do the work and put together the right product at a good price. Id rather buy it once and get it right rather than need 2 or 3 of the same over time.
Pros
  • Build Quality
Cons
  • I wish I could get them in 10 foot models.

Absolutely the best for fishing spoons!
December 2, 2020
I have 2 of these paired with Senator and wireline for striped bass. The action on these rods is fantastic and they have just enough backbone to pull in those cow stripers that hit the big spoons. A must if you are fishing bunker spoons!

You will not be disappointed with this rod. The rod is made with quality parts and for a good price. The rods work amazing with bunker spoons and it really does make a difference. I have no complaints other than I didn't buy it sooner and I wish I never bought cheaper imitation on ebay. Highly recommend and I now have two. I matched it with a Penn 113HSP.

I understand that Tony designed these to use steel line.  I don't use this kind of line.  Would it be possible to use 60 lb or 100 lb braid with this and a TM bunker spoon?  What size leader

should I use?

1 Answer
You can certainly use braid, you just may have to add an inline trolling weight to get the spoon down to your desired depth. 65lb braid and 60lb mono or fluorocarbon leader depending on the conditions is what we would recommend.

I’ve never had one in hand , but can you tell me if there is a specific reason to use the rods and spoons together ? Or can a good 6 foot conventional with a Talica 8 or beefier rod and a talica 12? Braid 50 lb Does the rod give any advantage over another good conventional ? Thanks
1 Answer
The rod that is sold for these spoons are designed for bunker spoon trolling. They are built to work the spoon properly and get the most action out of them.

Are these rods only used for trolling Bunker Spoons, or can they be used for MOJOs, Umbrella rigs..
1 Answer
I personally would not use the Tony Maja rods for anything other than the bunker spoons. They are a little fast action for anything heavier. I would recommend using a rod in the 50lb test range and in the moderate action range as well. A rod with a heavier backbone and stiffer action is recommended.

I would like to purchase 2 of the Tony Maja Bunker spoon rods but I fish deep water which reels would you recommend that I could put 350yds 50lb wire with backing and mono leader?
1 Answer
We use the Penn 113H2SP for wire line. I am sure you meant 350 feet of 50lb Monel. That is what we rig with is usually 300 feet. You will need the #4 spoons and will have much success with this setup.
