Built with premium components and a distinguished custom rod feel, the TackleDirect Platinum Hook Tournament Billfish Rods will have you well equipped for high stakes bill fishing scenarios. These high performance billfish rods are the result of stringent "on the water" design and testing by some of the finest sport anglers around the world. The durable E-Glass blanks feature a softer, more parabolic action that leads to a higher percentage of quality hooksets and less pulled hooks when targeting sailfish with circle hooks. The heavy duty Fuji SIC Guides are perfect for use with lighter monofilament lines. The unique handle configuration of a Winthrop Epic Butt and premium quality cork foregrip are comfortable to fish with and give the rod a one-of-a-kind styling.

John

I'm sure these rods would be okay for live baiting/bump trolling but could they stand up to 5-7 knot trolling with say a dink ballyhoo under a skirt (with a J-hook) or is the action just too slow to set the hook?
1 Answer
John, the TackleDirect Platinum Hook Tournament Billfish Rods were primarily designed for trolling small / dink ballyhoo with circle hooks and kite fishing applications depending on the model.  The 16-30 model is best for kite fishing and circle hook trolling for sailfish. The 20-40 is best for targeting white marlin when circle hook trolling. And the slightly heavier 30-50 is ideal for white marlin, small blue marlin, and even striped marlin out west when circle hook trolling. Based off the information you have provided so far, the 30-50 is probably the best option for you if trolling ballyhoo with a j hook unless you are targeting tuna. If so, we can certainly try to find you a better rod for your application. If we can help any further, please let us know!
