I have used star rods for surf for many years and as well as on boats. Always a reliable product for the price. Well worth the money.

This is an expensive fishing rod, but I had no buyers remorse. This rod paired with a Shimano Saragosa 8000 with 65 pound braid is the perfect line for fishing for grouper and snapper. It’s lightweight and strong and has the perfect amount of bend and backbone. This combination has brought in many 10 to 15 pound grouper and red snapper. I’ve used it on amberjack as well, but I will need something stronger and 60 pound fluorocarbon leader.
Pros
  • Light weight, strong
Cons
  • None. There is nothing wrong with this rod.

After reading a lot of positive reviews on this lineup I finally pulled the trigger and ordered this rod to pair with my Saragosa 10k. The rod is build to a high standard and is super lite. I cannot wait to get this setup out on the water.
Pros
  • Lite weight
  • High-end components
Cons
  • None

Here’s the rod handling a 55”, 100 lb. bluefin. Braid never comes close to hitting the fore grip.

Bought this a while ago and finally got to use it in Loreto, MX. First popper cast at a paddy and I hooked up on a dorado. Great action, enough backbone. Perfect for my intended use.

Star rods web page says that spinning jig rod reference SGJ64MH has a butt length of 14.5 inches(EVA w/Alum Gimbal). Tackle Direct says it has a 12 inch length. Please confirm which is the correct specification. A 12 inch butt for jigging is short and it cannot be anchor well. Also what is the weight of this rod.
1 Answer
Although we get our information directly from Star Rods, i would assume that there measurements they have on their site are more accurate than ours. Since our customer service staff is working remotely i am unable to physically measure the rod butt myself. I have to assume Stars measurement of 14.5' butt with gimbal to be the correct specifications

What reel would you pair with the Sgj64mh
1 Answer
Kurt,

I would recommend a Shimano Saragosa 8000 or similarly sized reel. Could jump up to the 10000 if you need additional line capacity depending on what you are targeting.
