Always ahead of the curve, Star Rods is one of the first manufacturers in the world to create fishing rods using basalt fiber. Basalt fiber used in conjunction with Duratech technology gives Plasma jigging rods the most advanced performance to date. Basalt fiber is superior to other fibers in aspects of strength, stability and tenacity. Basalt is a naturally occurring volcanic rock found throughout the world. The rock is melted and spun into continuous extremely fine fibers, which are used throughout the rods. Basalt fibers are known for their exceptional durability with resistance to heat, moisture and UV light. Plasma jigging rods; Strong as a rock, light as a feather.

I've been using Star Plasma rods for several years and have never been let down, even on huge (over 300#) sharks.
Pros
  • everything I want and need in an offshore rod.
Cons
  • none

Lightweight, Great Appearance, Perfect feel, and plenty of Backbone
April 15, 2019
I paired this with a Seigler SG reel and its now my go-to setup for anything in the Gulf. The design of the reel seat is such that its a long ways up the butt, much more than my other rods. while that will take some getting used to, i think i will prefer it. This is the best mass-produced jigging rod out there. I also own Trevala, Cedros, and US Tiger lites... this is the best one with the Cedros coming in second simply because of weight. Don't hesitate to buy this!
Pros
  • good components, looks, light-weight

Broke her in on monster AJs this spring , even got smoked on the saltiga dogfight 8000 Df a few times on 90+ lb AJs but the top of the line components and blank make this a weapon . Can't for cape cod the end of summer to give it the full on test with BFT.
Pros
  • Top of the line Fuji components, and a stud blank
Cons
  • None so far or at all

Very light yet powerful

The first thing you notice about this rod is how light it is. But it has a bunch of backbone for such a thin rod. Not cheap, but a great rod.

good jigging rod
April 12, 2014
I went on a jigging/popping trip a few months ago and the captain had a few of these on the boat paired with Trinidad 16a reels. I got cut off on my set up and the star plasma jigger was sitting right there ready to go wit a jig already tied on. I grabbed it and noticed immediately how light the rod was. I caught several blackfin tuna on it. it has a nice bend and is plenty strong enough. I thought it fished as good as some of the higher priced rods I use.
Pros
  • price, weight, strength, good bend, quality components

I live in Toms River NJ and will be moving to SW Florida in a year and was told this rod (PJC52H) with a shimano torium 16a would be great for grouper, snapper, and amber jack. How do you think this outfit would be for ocean fluke, sea bass, and cod in nj and ny?
1 Answer
This setup seems would be appropriate for both the Florida and NJ/NY applications so long as the jigs and or weight you are using doesnt exceed the 8 oz. rating. Some anglers may prefer a longer rod than 5' 2" but that is a matter of personal preference.

I was hoping that you might be designing plasma jigging rod 100-150 lbs. rating X-Heavy with a 16 oz. jig weight or greater, A rod like this would be a big help for dealing with the large grouper we often catch off shore. Thanks, Matt

Will pass this onto Star Rods and let them know!
