Star Rods is pleased to introduce the new Paraflex Surf Series rods. These rods are manufactured using the same Duratech epoxy and graphite blend as in the successful Paraflex Boat rods. Thin diameter, high density graphite walls, and a low seperation point on the two piece models give these rods the perfect actions for throwing bait and lures of all kinds.

Star Rods have combined Fuji Low Rider and K-Frame tangle free guides with Alconite rings for maximum casting distance. CrossWrap PowerGrip handles allow for a comfortable grip for a long day in the surf. Longer casting, light weight blanks, and anti-tangling guides with the strength you have come to know from Paraflex make these rods another best in class for Star Rods.

I can throw lures as light as a Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 a long way when I'm covering ground on the beach, then when I want to kick back with my wife and drink a few cold ones I can get my sand spike, rig up a high-low with a 2-4 oz pyramid sinker and fish from my beach chair.

You can never go wrong with Star Rods
April 9, 2020
I've been using Star Rods for over 10 years! I added the 10'6" two piece to my arsenal and it's become one of my go-to surf rod for Stripers in MTK to big rays and sand bar shark in Dewey Beach! The two pieces makes it easy to pack up and head to your next day on the water!

Excellent quality for the price
September 18, 2019
I purchased the 8' model and paired it with the Penn Slammer III 4500 for late night jetty fishing. I missed a few fish during the first outing (not blaming the rod, obviously I have to take some ownership for it). The rod was stiffer than the 9' St. Croix Mojo I was used, however as I warmed up to the Star Paraflex, it blows the Mojo out of the water. It handles BIG blues and quality stripers. I have nothing but great things to say about STAR.
Pros
  • Durable, lifetime warranty, lightweight
Cons
  • Less sensitive than competitors, but after getting used to it, it becomes easy

Star Paraflex 11
June 20, 2019
Got this rod for casting BIG topwater plugs at Blacktip sharks here in South Florida. It has performed
very well and handles the sharks very nicely. I also use it in the inlets to drift baits for sharks.
Mind you, we are talking about sharks pushing 150lbs! Blacktips will put to test any rod used on
them. The casting is unreal! Ala "Para" Flex. Whips the big lures to the moon. Light enough to
cast without getting much fatigue. I tag sharks for NOAA, so it is important to use gear that gets
the job done. The Paraflex is a winner in my book.
Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Casting it will put a smile on your face
  • Very well built
  • Very robust

10 ft, 1 1/2-5oz: Good Surf Rod
May 1, 2018
I recently used this rod for the first time on a trip to OBX. It performed great! Using it with light bait rigs for sea mullet and drum, It handled 2 1/2-5 oz. sinkers very well. It may be a little stiff for the lower end of its range, but it cast very well for me. The rod is light and sensitive, yet has plenty of backbone. I thoroughly enjoyed fishing with it. I landed several slot red and black drum as well as a few small sharks with no issues. Very pleased with the quality and performance. I have several Ticas (which I like) and while the Star is a little more expensive I believe its worth the extra $.
Pros
  • Light and sensitive
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • none

Very Good bait rod
December 24, 2015
My first Star rod. Bought it December 2014. I like its thin diameter for its power and strength. Handled 5 ft brown sharks easily. The rating up to 9 oz is a bit high. I consider 5 oz and a bunker chunk or 6 oz and a clam to be sweet spot. It will lob 4-5 oz and a bunker head. Action is more moderate than fast which I like. I find that a long sweeping cast motion is needed to properly load the rod due to the moderate action. Hardware and finish are good for price. Very comparable to st croix mojo line. Didn't come with butt cap so added a doorknob. I would consider buying another.

11' 3-8 oz casting
July 4, 2015
Used as a bait rod for stripers blues and sharks. Rod is more of a moderate action than fast. Requires a slow long sweeping cast to load the rod properly. 4-5 oz is sweet spot with a bunker chunk. 6 oz maximum with small bait. Throws well over 120 yards with 25 mono . Small diameter for the length and strength of the rod makes it easy to handle. Good quality rod and components. Whipped a lot of big bluefish and several brown sharks to 5 feet.

Great rod - good value
September 3, 2014
I've used Star Rods for many years and the 11 foot Paraflex Surf Rod doesn't disappoint! Lots of backbone to launch your lure or bait, without sacrificing tip sensitivity. Great rod - I highly recommend!
Pros
  • Lightweight, very tough, quality materials...
Cons
  • A little stiffer than I was looking for in Medium/Heavy action - leans toward the heavy side...

Star Paraflex - BIG Bang for Bucks !!
May 5, 2014
This is a great surf rod - it casts well , subdues fish quickly , and is superbly built in USA with quality components . It is tough and durable , and coping well with the rigors of rock and jetty fishing . All in all , great bang for buck ; with a lifetime warranty . This rod has exceeded all of my expectations in all respects , and I will be buying another Paraflex model in the near future . These rods are way better than any of the over-priced junk available in Aussie tackle shops , and importing from Tackle Direct [ several orders to date ] is a pleasure !
Star are an excellent rod builder , and the Paraflex are superb rods indeed . Highly recommended .

I'm interested in the 11' 3-8oz spinning model and will normally use it with 4-6 oz and bait. I have a lot of 2 oz lures though and would and would like to know if I can expect to cast them as well as I would with a rod that has a 2 oz rating. I'll be using 40lb Superline on my reel.
1 Answer
The 2 oz lures wouldn't cast as well as say a 3-4 oz lure. The rod wouldn't load properly.

To pair with your Star Paraflex 9ft, the Shimano Ultegra XTD surf spinning reel ULT14000XSD.  As is has plenty of drag and gives to excellant casting distance with the long spool.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

1 Answer
Samuel,

Fishing for big snook and tarpon off bridges and piers with a Shimano Saragosa 6000, I would pair it with the 9ft Star Paraflex surf spinning rod PFS1225S90 with 30lb braid.  This will get you more line capacity and a little more backbone for handling big fish.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

What would be a good long distance spinning reel for surf fishing in South Florida using the 11 foot PFS1530S11 rod? Would be for pompano, permit, snook, blacktip sharks etc. Thank you!
1 Answer
The best reel for that rod would be the Shimano Saragossa 8K or the Penn Slammer III 6500 or 7500. Both of these reels have adequate line capacity and enough power to handle the species you intend on targeting.

What’s the most braided line diameter can be loaded on the 9ft rod lure rating 1-4 oz?
1 Answer
This rod is rated for up to 25 lb. test mono, which is equivalent to roughly 80-100 lb. test for braid, but that's a little overkill for that rod. Depending on what reel you intend to match with this rod, you'd be fine going with braid anywhere from 20-40 lb. test.

The only 'advantage' the Paraflex has over the SpeedMaster is it is rated to handle 2 more ounces in regards to lure weight.

The Star PFS1225S90 Paraflex Surf Rod would balance well with the Penn Slammer 3500 and the image is cut off right at the cap. The two would be versatile for you, fishing side banks jetties and more. The 9' star rod does have a cap located at the bottom of the rod.

The Slammer III 4500 would be a great match for the 8' Paraflex. Because the rod is currently not in stock, I cannot put one on our scale to find out the weight, but I can assure you that the Paraflex is a relatively light weight surf rod and is very well balanced in terms of weight distribution.
