Great balance and control
April 3, 2018
Just had a chance to use the new rod last weekend . First trip and caught a sailfish and king on the 6 ft EX2050 C6 version rated for 20-50# which I matched to TLD 25 with 40 lb test. Great balance and feel. Also trolled a 10" large lip rebel lure ( 18 feet depth) for grouper /snapper. Nice rod tip libration when lure is performing correctly yet stiff enough that you avoid too much flex. I have switched to no rollers in my trolling rod guides (less issues long term and less weight) and this rod is the ticket. I am getting a second one this weekend if I can get it in low $100 range.

Great Rod, Great Price
April 27, 2015
I used to stick with Ugly Stick (price point). After a friend turned me on to Star Rods, I now have 10 in my boat. 6 with AVET, and 4 with Shimano Bait Runners. Can tackle anything. You will not find a better rod for this pricing.
Pros
  • Great feel and seat. Looks are very appealing.
Cons
  • Many rods available, you have to feel them (boat show) to find what you want for specific task.

Have Penn Fathom FTH25NLD2 two speed with Sufix 832 braid, 50#.  Will be fishing charter off San DIego for Yellowfin, Bluefin, etc.

What do you recommend for a rod to match?

1 Answer
From the Star Aerial Stand-Up's, the EX3080C-6 (STA-0231) would be your best bet. It will allow you to pitch baits and do some light trolling.

What is the difference in the weight between the STA O2 36 rod in the STA O2 35 rod
1 Answer
Hi Steven, The Star EX50100RS Aerial Stand-up Rod is built on a Heavy Action Blank that is stiffer and is rated for a Monofilament line weight of 50-100lb line. The Star EX3080RS Aerial Stand-up Rod is built on a Medium-Heavy action blank and is a little lighter in the line weight and has a 30lb-80lb monofilament line rating. Due to the different actions and line weight rating, Model: EX3080RS is a little lighter and softer blank than the EX50100RS model. These are the biggest differences between the two models. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

How big are the eyes? 50-80 with ring guides seems to be a good fit for 4-8 size planers (Eglass & aluminum reel seat) IF the eyes are big enough to pass a 250 spro swivel for a wind on bridle.
1 Answer
Hi AJ, According to Star Rods, The EX3080RS Aerial Stand-up Rod has a roller first guide and a roller tip with standard ring guides in the middle. A #4 planer won't be an issue, #8 planer would be the maximum size to use on it. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Would the EX50100RS pair well with an avet HXW 5/2 MC Raptor for small to medium bluefin and sharks
1 Answer
This would be a good setup for smaller class bluefin and sharks. The EX3080RS would also be a good rod to pair with the Avet HXW 5/2 MC Raptor as well. It all comes down to the size class of fish you intend on encountering. The EX50100RS would definitely be a safer option as it is the heavier model, but the EX3080RS would still be a good fit.

Which rod to pair with a Penn Squall 30VSW (loaded with 100# hollowcore and 80# topshot) for Gulf of Mexico party boat chunking for Yellowfin to 100#s?  30/80 or 50/100?
1 Answer
I would recommend the 30-80 MH model stand up for for this fishing application, but you certainly wont go wrong with either if you desire that little extra backbone and stiffness the 50-100 rod would give you!

What model would you recommend for trolling with shimano tld 20 for nearshore and offshore. Kingfish and dolphin mostly.
1 Answer
EX1530C-6 would be the best model with the Star Aerial Standup line of rods. We would suggest taking a look at the EXKF for kings and dolphin, would match perfectly with the TLD 20:

What rod do you recommend for TLD 20 What rod do recommend for shimano bait runner 8000 What rod do you recommend for shimano bait runner 12000
1 Answer
For the TLD 20 I recommend the STA-0230, for the two spinning reels you would have to use the same rod because there is only one spinning model in this line, it would be STA-0226. If your looking for something lighter check out the para-flex boat rod to go with the 8000. Any further questions feel free to call in toll free at 1-888-354-7335.
