This radio is the next generation and update of the HX870. It's the same size as the famous HX300, but jammed full of more features with the GPS addition.
I ended up ordering a 2nd, and will register an MMSI to a second hull - one kayak, one power boat. If you ever mothership a kayak - get dropped off by a power boat and picked up later, the ability to talk to each other is invaluable. You can register a free MMSI through US Power Squadrons website. Your MMSI number is filed in a database with FCC/MRS, with whatever information you want to be there, is accessible by USCG, and is specific to your radio and hull. Aside from the instant and automatic safety advantage sending an All Ships Distress Call, anyone with a DSC locator can find your position. Ships and other pleasure craft navigating with DSC/AIM can see you on their navigation screen. You can poll ships in range of your position. DSC lets you set up a private intercom with other MMSI numbers, and locate each other on GPS. It's also priced about $100 less than another good handheld VHF/GPS will all these features. If you want a smaller VHF only, look at the HX40, which is a tiny radio that compares with the HX300.
Pros
  • Cost, GPS/DSC, the ultimate handheld for safety; group functions including location and private channels.

The HX 890 from Standard Horizon is waterproof, floats and provides 6 watts of output power for transmission, scans, has DSC capability and GPS functions. This is an excellent handheld VHF radio at a reasonable price. Additionally, this radio allows the use of alkaline batteries in a pinch, if the rechargeable battery is dead. A great package at a reasonable price.,

The only draw back is the GPS function is a tad bit complex and requires practice to master.
Pros
  • Waterproof
  • Floats
  • 6 watts power output
  • can employ rechargeable or alkaline batteries
  • Price
Cons
  • Complicated GPS function
