9' Medium Power, Moderate Fast Action
November 25, 2020
I have several more expensive rods but this is one of my favorites. It's moderate fast action is easy to cast well. Some of my more expensive faster action rods take more practice to cast accurately and have a tendency to break live bait off of the hook during the cast. This slightly slower action is great for not loosing live shrimp and mud minnows. It can also cast relatively light weights for a good distance. I can consistently get 70 plus yards with just a 1 1/2 oz. Breakaway brand sputnik sinker and a single drop bottom rig with a medium shrimp as bait. That's pretty good for a small 9' surf rod and a light weight. I can get more distance with some of my other small surf rods but they are not as smooth or forgiving.
Pros
  • Smooth and easy to cast. Great for live bait.
Cons
  • None.

It’s okay for the Price
October 31, 2020
I’ve had the 9ft 1/2 - 2 1/2oz for 5 years with no issues, when I fish at least four times a week. It deff has backbone to catch Big bass and gator blues. I will say it’s a stiff rod and doesn’t have as much rod sensitivity as I would like. I use this rod as my jetty surf rod, I will say there are deff better rods out there in the $150-220 range, you can find.
Pros
  • Has backbone, for big fish
Cons
  • Rod sensitivity/ slower action then I would like. Casts okay.

Love it!

It’s one of the cheaper rods that I’ve been using but it’s one of my favorites! Nice backbone and casts well. The 10’ 1-4 has handled 1/2oz bucktails up to 4oz sinkers with a chunk without any issues.
Pros
  • Great price
  • Good backbone
  • Casts its range very well
Cons
  • It would be amazing if they made a new version with better guides and components.

9' Medium casts horribly
May 4, 2019
I was in a bind with a broken stick and needed a replacement fast. My old rod was a 9' M 1-4oz and was mainly used for flicking plastics, tins and light plugs. I mainly stayed under 2 oz for the rod so I figured a 1/2 oz. - 2 oz. stick might serve my needs better as I'd mostly be right in the heart of its weight class. Well, that might still be the case but definitely not this rod. I fumbled through my plug bag to find something this rod threw well and never found it. The recovery of the rod is just awful and the tip sensitivity is none existant. The action on this rod is moderate to slow, and in a 50/50 split that results in an unsensitive noodle.
Pros
  • Comfortable cork foregrip and Fuji reelseat
Cons
  • Recovery
  • 50/50 split
  • Lacking Sensitivity

Garbage
September 13, 2018
My 8ft medium 2 piece broke in less than 10 casts. I wasn't even on a fish. It was rated up to 2oz and I was throwing less than 1.5oz. I emailed St Croix and wanted a refund. They said send the rod and we'll see what we can do. I expected at least an opportunity for a different model if not my refund. I told them I didn't want the rod and I didn't want to waste my time. The rod arrived at their shipping location and then waited 8 days to contact them. I got an email saying they sent another top half with the rod. Terrible rod and terrible customer service. And I missed a trip I was waiting for all year because they want to sell an inferior and overpriced product.
Pros
  • None
Cons
  • Doesn't work, overpriced, inferior. Customer service will lead you on.

Not Just For The Beginer....
February 2, 2018
I've matched this pole with poles $50-$75 and its stands up to togh fishing. Like the rocks out at the lighthouse out ast in MTK, the mecca of striper fishing.....it stood up to the test there so t can do work anywhere. good for beginers anda god back up or even main setup. Pair up with tht new Tsunami shield reel with 13 seals for under $120 andyournlooking at a real nice set up thats togh as nails and canstand up to the toughest conditions.
Pros
  • Low Price for a quality pole. Has backbone but remains light in weight and very durable.
Cons
  • nothing as of yet

Garbage. Stay away!
July 27, 2017
I've went through 3 of these rods already and all 3 broke in the first month of use. I had it paired with the shimano Calcutta 400B and casting is beautiful. Major down side is the quality is complete garbage when it comes to the backbone fight of a fish. All 3 times mine broke were all above the middle where the 2 sections come together. The first one snapped fighting a 20# fish that i still managed to muscle in d3espite a bad rod lol....I thought it was a fluke so i did the warranty, got the second pole and 2 weeks later it snaps fighting another fish. I couldn't believe it so I went to my local dealer to see what can be done this time. Once again I did the warranty claim (each time costed me my own shipping cost which was over 25$ due to the size of package) so now I have went through over 50$ extra on my original purchase of the rod and a week later after receiving my 3rd rod it breaks in the same spot!. Clearly this is a defect in the rod as online you will now find several other claims on the rod breaking. Wish I did the research and stayed away from this rod and wasting money. If your looking for a quality rod best to just get what you pay for. When asked st Croix what is being done about the defective rod and they claim there's no issues with the rod lineup itself and was just my rods that were defective smh..... however if this was the case then why are there reports all over the internet of this same issue happening left and right. St Croix needs to get their heads out of the beach sand and fix these mistakes. Till they do I'm not going to trust anymore st Croix rods.
Pros
  • Great look and feel. Casts great.
Cons
  • Rod is defective as many others have broken this Rod as I did my 3 rods. Stay away and get better. Don't be left out there fighting the fish of a lifetime and loose it due to a faulty rod. Theres better for the price than this garbage.

Decent
April 26, 2016
This is a great rod for my heavier plugging applications. It's true to its rating and I have had no issues casting 5oz and a chunk.
Paired with a Van Staal VSX250, it is an unstoppable combo for big blues and other large species.
Tackle Direct did a great job packing and shipping the rod. 10/10.

st junk

The rod is ok, but Ive broken 2 of them, they just dont make them like they used to. If you dont fish every day it would probably be fine. Its ony$25 for the replaacement blank when you break it so add that onto your price.
Pros
  • decent but not pro quality
Cons
  • junk breaks

Awesome Rod!
May 2, 2015
The 10' rod is very nice and well made, I have other models of the rod but this is my favorite. Not heavy and balances well with a Penn SSV6500BLS. Got to test it out and it handled a 25lb striper with ease. I highly recommend it!

Very well made rod

The St. Croix Triumph Surf is my primary rod for everything when it's not to rough. It's paired with a Penn Conflict 6000 and it balances nicely.
