Love this rod. I use this rod when I am live lining bunker for striped bass. I have it paired with a Penn lever drag and set to a low setting. This rod has a ton of backbone. I like a moderate action for this type of fishing since it is more forgiving reducing the likelihood for slack in the line.
Pros
  • Nice moderate action
  • Plenty of backbone
Cons
  • Wish they made a saltwater version to ensure longevity.

Easily transported 9 foot rod!
May 5, 2015
I had to try out a St Croix 2 piece Musky rod. There are times the long rods we use today just cant be taken along. I wanted a nine foot Musky rod that would fit in:
my truck bed, a car's passenger compartment, airline luggage parameters, private planes, etc. At pennies over 6 feet long when disassembled, this is a quality, heavy duty rod that meets those requirements and is a pleasure to use. The joint is extremely strong and the rod performs no differently than my one piece models. If you need portability in an extra heavy Musky rig, look no further. Reading the specs made me leery of the weight. Despite this the rod feels very light in the hand, maybe because it is so well balanced. Highly recommended.
Pros
  • Balanced. Portable. Solid.
Cons
  • None

Surprisingly lightweight
December 31, 2014
After fishing my new Premier I am totally impressed! I have a St Croix Slingblade in this same length and wanted a second, stiffer rod for the huge Bucktails and Bulldawgs that overloaded the rod I had. Expected a "throw in the boat" kind of rod, got a rod that is now favored above my (expensive) Legend series. The rod is lightweight, strong, and has fatter, longer cork handles than my other St Croix Musky rods. This rod stands above all my other Musky rods and is the new favorite!
Pros
  • Lightweight, strong, reasonable price point.
Cons
  • None.

Excellent Trolling Rod
August 3, 2014
I use this rod to troll for Striped Bass. The tip is sensitive but the strong lower section and the length allow you to handle large fish. Coupled with a lightweight reel, like an Avet, it is light enough for me to troll with it one handed easily.

Great rod I have it paired with an Avet SX. I use it for all types of fishing. Tough enough to handle blues and stripers and light enough to feel that fluke bite.

Melton Hill muskies beware!
December 14, 2013
Great rod, heavy enough to throw 2-3 ounce lures yet enough flex to not kill your back for work on Monday. Throwing 1 ounce rubber shads to 3 ounce pencils and bombers. Combined with a Ming Yang MC500 pulled a 48" Muskie from the roots without concern, and numerous 20-25# stripers hangin around the skips at the fossil plant. Not my first st. Croix rod but the first one I fell in love with immediately. Very comfortable cork handles, very nice color, every guide perfectly in-line, and made in the U.S.A. What's not to love?
Pros
  • Traditional cork grip
  • Lightweight
  • Shorter handle
Cons
  • Lack of butt cap for climbing over rocks. My rod is often my walking stick.

High quality rod!

I've owned this rod over six years and enjoy fishing it. At its max lure weight range, it sometimes creaks a bit so I tend to throw lighter Bucktails with it. Never a problem fighting, or landing fish. 8' long is my overall favorite length for casting rods. If Northern Pike are in the area, this is my go to rod.
Pros
  • Well made Musky rod. Best for lighter lures in the spring.
