A work of art!

I bought the St.Croix Legend Trek 7 foot, mlf3 travel rod for my annual trips to Sarasota area, for beach and inshore fishing. Paired it with a Penn Battle II 3000 reel, filled with 20 lb, Super Slick braid. It’s the perfect combo. Ideally balanced, light, and casts a mile. For fish up to 10 pounds, plenty of backbone. I caught a 25 pound juvenile tarpon, but that was probably the rod’s upper limit....took 20 minutes to land it. But if you want a rod that will take a fish that size, but is also fun and bends with 1-2 pound inshore fish, this is a great choice.
Pros
  • Corrosion resistant hardware.
Cons
  • Small con, but would prefer tapered front cork grip instead of this rod?s squared-off front grip.

You can find better rods

A portable, lightweight rod with a very slim profile. My only issue with it is that it comes apart sometimes when casting. Thankfully, reeling my line brings back the lost piece.

Convenient travel rod with power
August 4, 2017
Pretty well constructed rod which is expected of a $500 rod. This is not as fanciful or as well designed as a Japanese rod of the same price range but gets the job done well with the convenience of being able to reduce to 3 sections. The case is well made and will give sufficient protection but I feel it could be a little more rigid especially when this rod might have to be checked-in on flights and may get bump around or stacked on. I would have preferred for this rod to have single footed guides rather then the double footed for the upper 4 or 5 guides to reduce weight and lower the profile. I would have also preferred for this rod to have a foam grip rather then cork especially since it was design for saltwater use.
Pros
  • Strong and well constructed
  • Fast action
  • Quality finishing
Cons
  • Should have single footed guide in the upper section of the rod to reduce weight and profile
  • No alignment marks for ease of setting up
  • Saltwater rod should have the option of a more lasting foam grip rather than cork

Very powerful yet still sensitive

I bought this to be a travel live bait rod that I could also cast.
I used it on the reef and dragged up a bunch of big snappers with 25lb fluorocarbon.
It performed like a champ. I put big bends on the rod and it did not feel like a travel rod at all
Pros
  • Sturdy
  • Powerful
  • Very sensitive
  • Nice casting
Cons
  • None yet

The Best travel rod for the urban fisherman.

This is the only rod you need to travel with. It's everything the reviews say and more. I fish both saltwater surf and freshwater and it handles everything and being that's it's a ML fast action you get a great fight on any fish but with the confidence you can land very large fish with St croix's advanced technology. I paired this rod with a Shimano Sustain 4000af with 20lb Super Slick and it really casts far. I have tried all the other travel rods and and this one will be the only rod I need now.

Well worth it!

I finally took the plunge and bought the travel spinning rod that everyone says is the best. No doubt about it; these rods can handle the majority of salt water species in most fishing conditions. Its multi piece construction makes travel with the rod much easier. The rod is very well made, and actually cosmetically as good as any production rod made. Pairs well with larger spinning reels like the 100/120 Quantums, Saltigas, etc..
